Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, ATS Centras

Cheers Boumsong (it's Alan isn't it?). Yeah, if you keep the old box it can be bolted straight in if you convert the engine to a fixed cam-belt tensioner, (obviously you've still got to sort the plumbing/wiring) but if you want a box that'll actually last then you need different gearbox mounts as we...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, ATS Centras

Plans are a bit cash-flow dependent, but hopefully it'll be getting built up for track use. I want to keep the exterior subtle, and it'll definitely keep the ATS for road use (I really like them!) but other than the dash and door cards the interior will be getting binned/sold and replaced with a cag...

Re: 1979 Scirocco GLS 1272cc

This is looking awesome. After having a Coupe S as my first car I've always had a thing for the small block engines, there's just something fun about them. Really liking all the effort going on under the skin, very cool car. A little tip I picked up a while back for welding up small holes rather tha...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, ATS Centras

Thanks treefinger. Just had a look through your build, it looks awesome! Do ask away if you've got any questions about the swap. I really wish I'd had the time to do mine to a higher standard. Hopefully over the next year it'll be getting a fair bit of love, and quite a change in direction. Are you ...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, New wheels

I thought I'd stick a quick update in here as it's been a little while. There's been another wheel change and some fiddling with engine mounts and pipe-work to tidy things up a bit, but otherwise it's just been being used really: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q271/ringwams/Scirocco/_MG_8111.jpg...

Re: Fiberglass Panels, what's out there?

Ah cool, thanks. They list front wings at £90 each, that'd be nice if they're still making them, and if they're half decent as wings are fairly tedious to make moulds for and mine aren't really straight enough to mould off of, they'd need a fair bit of contouring to get usable. I'll have to get in t...

Fiberglass Panels, what's out there?

Hi guys. I'm just wondering what's about in terms of composite mk2 Scirocco panels at the moment. I'm wanting to put my 1.8t'd Scala on a diet, and I'm considering making moulds to produce some fibreglass panels for it, but if there's something already on the market for sensible money then there's n...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, New wheels

Thanks guys, glad to hear other people like the wheels too. I think the black centers are growing on me, I still want to do something with them, but I'm not 100% what yet. A couple of quick shots mates got while I was swapping over my outer CV joints at the weekend at a friends workshop: Backing int...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo, New wheels

Well the new wheels have finally found their way down to the shire, with a massive thanks to a couple of guys off Retro Rides for delivering them for free from North Wales! Tried them on the car and I'm really pleased with how them look. It could do with comming down a few mm, and the rears need spa...

Good info. I need to do this too, so if you've got much leftover I'd happily take it off your hands. Where are you based?

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo

Thanks guys. mark1gls, yeah you're not far at all then. Might be a bit out of your way but there's a monthly Retro-Rides meet in taunton I always go to that you'd be more than welcome to come to sometime. Need to find out when exactly as we've changed it this month but I can't remember which day it'...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo

Thanks Village Idiots, the sense of satisfaction's a lot of the reason I did it, it sounds silly but I'm not actually very bothered about having a fast car on the road, it is good fun, but I rarely use the power these days, which is why I'm more bothered about working on the handling now. It's partl...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo

Thanks Lance, you're more than welcome to steel the master cylinder idea, but just to warn you I did have to modify the reservoir slightly to clear the wiper arm in the end, as it clashed by a few mm. I'm not sure what else uses a master cylinder that's mounted vertically like this but there may be ...

Re: Show us your Mk2 - picture thread.......

Here's my '88 Scala, I used to be an active member on here back on the old forum, The Scirocco's spent a lot of time in storage since, but now it's been giving a new lease of life in the form of a 20vt and has been put back into daily use, build thread here: '88 Scala, 20 Valve Turbo Ignore the whee...

Re: '88 Scala, 20 valve turbo

Cheers. It's not slow but it's nothing spectacular. The engine's a 150bhp model, and still running the standard VW map and boost level of 5/6psi, so won't be anything over 155bhp no matter how well my exhaust/intercooler are doing. Still, at ~172bhp ton it's not at all slow either. I'm planning to p...
