Just as an aside while I'm sitting here with a coffee, is there a m plate decoder for the scirocco? I know on the old buses and campers there is a site where you input all your m plate data and it gives you build date, options etc. Does such a thing exist with these cars? I'd love to know how early ...

An '82 car will have lots of Mk1 (Scirocco/Golf) bits. The Haynes is mainly based on the post-'85 models. Your car wouldn't ever have had the expansion tank.
