Re: SOLD - 1992 - Scirocco 1.8 GT II - £9,000 - Bicester

Fairmont still have the car - they've recently uploaded a walk around and driving video to Youtube:

Re: Current pricing

I think it's impossible to put a value on it without seeing it in the flesh, or at least some high resolution photos. Even then, these early Mk2s are so rare, there is little data around to estimate a realistic selling price. Hardly any have been through auction in recent years.

For newer cars ...

Re: Exhaust replacement

I've not attempted this job, but for reference, this is the official VW special tool set for the job, according to VW's service manual:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185989552795

Just simple wedges to drive into the clamps. Apparently, some sideways force on the downpipe may be needed to bash the ...

Re: 1992 MK2 GTII turns off (engine and electrics) whilst drving

The only thought I have is that if the old ignition switch was burnt out, I would expect some damage to wiring connectors and possibly the wiring. If so, it is possible there are bad connections, leading to unreliability and eventually burnout

I love it - same colour and year as mine. 17 years as a daily drive is impressive - I can only imagine the wrench.

Re: Steering column plastic boot in engine bay - how important?

I guess the purpose of the boot is to keep dirt and moisture out of the universal joint shaft and to seal the engine bay from the cabin.. The part number for RHD is 172419523, certainly available used or as a new aftermarket part. Looking at VW"s service manual for running gear, fitting would ...

Well spotted, a few mistakes in the listing, not least ULEZ compliance, but they seem to like it.

Luckily there were two keen bidders in the auction so I got a decent price

Re: Hit from behind

I can't see why they wouldn't agree to a repair at your own garage - it saves them money and any risk associated with the repair is then yours. That should then avoid a Cat S designation. But then, they may think differently.

An easy way to test out the effect of Cat S on insurance premiums would ...

Re: Hit from behind

Hopefully enough time to sort out something before the wedding - hope you have a great day.

Bear in mind the market value should be the typical price you'd pay to buy a car of the same condition and mileage from a reputable motor dealer, not the trade-in or private sale value. So it's worth ...

Re: Hit from behind

I feel for you, a rear end shunt was often at the back of my mind when my Scirocco almost seemed to become invisible to some drivers, with very close following distances.

Unfortunately, I fear a proper repair to insurance standards is not straightforward. I would take the car to a bodyshop asap to ...

Re: SOLD - 1992 - Scirocco 1.8 GT II - £9,000 - Bicester

Well, after 8.5 years of ownership, I'm quite sad to see it go. A nice post-auction video review here:

https://youtu.be/Tcaj8i7CvH4?feature=shared

It is currently showing as untaxed with the V5C not updated, which suggests it went to a trade buyer I'll be interested to see if it comes back on the ...

Re: Introducing Thor! ;)

I can understand you buying it back - I'd happily buy back most of the VWs I've owned over the years. My Scirocco sold at auction last weekend - registered 1 August 1993 (L-reg), reportedly the last MK2 sold in the UK. Health and wider family responsibilities were gradually getting in the way of ...
