HELP! Buzzing from dashboard and oil light flashing

Post by RoccoGTII »

I have a buzzing noise from the dash and a flashing oil light. :crying:

I have added some gauges to the car and used some second hand sensors. One is for the oil pressure, and the other oil temperature. When these are unplugged the buzzing and flashing still occurs on the dash.

1. I drove all the way to Cosford, no problem, drove home started to buzz
2. I drove all the way to Beaulie and it was fine no problem
3. I drove 2 minutes down the road and it started. Turn the engine off it goes away. Go above 2000 rpm and it starts again.

The car drives really nice and idles where it shoudl, just under 1000 and no juddering. Smooth thorugh gears and starts and turns of ok.

Is this a dodgy sensor, or do you think I have a real problem?

Has anyone had this before and did you have a solution? :read:

I currently suffer from this. That's because I ran the car down to London last week and didn't check my oil level. Buzzer went off on the motorway miles away from services, so I had to wait until the next one. Put a litre in. Carried on. Buzzer went off again. Stopped at next services. Put another litre in. On the journey back the buzzer only went off when my speed dropped under 50 mph.

An oil change at the weekend along with the oil sensors/temp senders replaced has not cured it. After a quick once over by MarkH it's reckoned that the damage is done and the crank bearings are toast. :crying:

Don't want to state the obvious but have you checked your oil level?

No solution here but I will be eagerly awaiting an intelligent response from one of the forum techies.

There is an FAQ about checking the operation of the oil pressure warning buzzer.

if the buzzer checks out ok, you'll then need to do a bit of investigation into where the problem is. oil pump or main bearings are the most likely, but check the sensors are working as they should before you get too stressed!

iv had this on 4 different scirocco's.

the buzzer only sounds if the pressure drops above 2000 rpm.its either the pressure switch,(electrical connection or replace with a new one),or crudd in the sump that causes a blockage to the oil pickup in the sump (remove sump and check for blockage) or the wiring at the ignition switch is loose.i had this on my gtx so i fitted a pressure guage (halfords or motorfactors) and found the pressure remained constant and was the connectors on the ignition switch causing the problem in my case.unless the engine has done 175,000 or more its unlikley to be the pump its self.

this should be all the info/tests you need to do to sort this problem and hope it helps you out.....my money is on the blocked pickup if its not the switch.

keep me posted

ben

great thank you for responsing and giving me something to try. Will investigate what has been mentioned and feedback for reference. No chance of doing anything this weekend though.

Where is the best place to get new sensors oil and temp?
and
Where is the best place to get a new sump gasket?

The buzzer also sounds if the senders and oil pressure are ok but the buzzer unit itself is at fault !! A new buzzer unit is about £35 plus VAT.

If you have two separate warning mechanisms telling you that your oil pressure is low, chances are that your oil pressure is low. The senders aren't 100% reliable, but for two to fail at once is unlikely. If you want to cross check, a gauge is your best bet.

Any progress?

My buzzer still goes off when warmed up. Also noticed that the idle becomes erratic when warm too.
I can live with it but I'd like a solution.
