Dave's 1991 1.8 GTII

Post by daveb142 »

Signed up a while back but I have only recently acquired a 1991 1.8 8v GTII Scirocco!

This will be used as my daily whilst I take my 1.8 20vt Corrado off the road to do the bodywork and upgrade some bits and bobs that I didn't have time or the money for during my conversion.

Anyway, about the rocco! A good friend of mine bought this a few years ago. It had a small dent in the rear quarter panel and both wings were dented. Apart from that the car was in pretty good condition, 94k on the clock and completely standard!
He lowered it, put some G60 steels on, a Polo 6n2 GTi steering wheel and a cherry bomb on the exhaust. He also replaced both front wings!

Unfortnately he started to have some carb / fuel related issues with it and wanted a more reliable car for work, therefore he took it off the road and it had been sat on his drive for about a year and a half.
Having completed the conversion into my Corrado in the summer for edition 38 (I had a bet on with a mate who does bodywork) and having started a new job in September, I thought it was time to look for a daily whilst I take the Corrado back off the road next month to have the bodywork etc done.

I got speaking to my mate who said I could have the Scirocco for an absolute steal of a price! So I instantly said yes and went down to look at it.
Apart from the steering wheel being covered in mould and the paint faded, it was okay. So I put a new battery on it, checked the oil and with a bit of easy start, she fired up! :-D

Surprisingly the brakes weren't seized and the tyres werent too bad! I drove it off the drive and got it recovered up-to my unit. After a power-washing the grime off of her she looked like this:

I got the car up on the ramps and it's solid underneath! Only thing that needs doing for a MOT is a track rod end and brake overhaul! I also need to replace the fuel filler neck as it's leaking.... I've been reading up on it and seems either a mk1 golf one with some modification should fit or a bmw e36 one with some mods. I'm gonna remove it this weekend and take a look. However this could have caused the said fueling problems a few years back!

I'm trying not to spend too much money or get too involved with this as my main project is the Corrado, but I can see myself getting carried away lol.
There's a few rust scabs on the roof gutters and the odd dent here and there but overall it's in pretty good condition!

For those interested, here's the Corrado:

Will update this month once I start some work on it

Looks a solid car you have there, might be worth having a look inside the fuel tank as the hole in the filler neck will let dirt and water to get inside the tank. There is a hole in the top of the tank under the back seat with the fuel sender in there, take the sender out and shine a torch in there.
You don't what dirt and grit getting into the fuel system so change the fuel filter as well.

Thanks mate! Yeah i'm gonna remove the fuel sender on the weekend and have a look to see what the state is inside the tank! That could have been the whole problem my mate was having tbh.

I had a stab at the fuel filler neck the other day, it's completely rotten through.....Gonna order up a new one and will update on the weekend when i get some work done on it :)

The filler necks aren't cheap new, post up in the wanted parts section or there is a couple of cars being broken up so ask them as well.
If you fit a metal filler neck paint it very well (Hammerite is rubbish as it chips off if hit by stones) and a good coat of waxoyl or simular will help.
Lots of info on this site about different filler necks and modding/fitting.

Bit of an update, the Scirocco is finally on the road!

With the Corrado running out of tax, I decided it was time to take her off the road and start on the bodywork! So I started to prepare for the Scirocco's first MOT since 2013! Admittedly I started pretty late...a day before the MOT :/
The fuel filler neck was completely rusted through. I managed to get hold of a BMW E36 fuel filler neck for cheap so have "bodged" that on for now. I don't like how it fits so will replace it at somepoint soon.

Anyway, 10 mins before the MOT I had finished the fuel filler neck, swapped the front wheels over for two of my BBS RZ's that had decent tread, changed the front windscreen wipers and set off. Spent too much time faffing with the filler neck that I didn't get to check the bulbs!

Fortunately they were all fine and the rocco passed it's MOT! the brakes were a bit dodgy but have since bedded in after being sat around for over a year.
Drove it around over the weekend and then gave it a fresh service. Had a spare oil filter that a few mates had messed with last year that was intended for the Corrado, so chucked that on.

Image

Have fitted my spare alarm from a previous car that I had lying around and cleaned the engine bay a bit.
I've also found that i've got a water leak coming through from the passenger side of the windscreen so need to get that re-sealed soon.

Will most likely chuck the other two BBS' on soon and give her a polish. Want to sort the niggly bits out and try and leave her alone the best I can and just drive it to work daily!
However i'm already getting the urge to buy a mates ABF engine and put it on bike carbs :|

Overall though i'm pretty impressed with the little Rocco! So slow compared to the Corrado but does the job :)

Congrats on getting an MOT and on the road.
Regarding the water leak have you seen the water coming through the windscreen corner? If not also look at the plastic membraine behind the door cards, water is meant to run inside the doors and drain out of the bottom (clear the drainage holes) and if the membraine is missing or split water will run inside the car.

Thanks Mark!

Yeah I've taken the passenger side vent out and the plastics around the bottom of the dash. Had a hose on the car and can see water leaking in through the windscreen! Plus the rust stained water marks kinda gave it away! haha. But the driver side also leaks over the door rubbers when parked on a curb so will check the membraine for that too!
