Works for me at work, work ISP is Exponential-e, using Firefox, but as previously stated, not at home using bethere with any browser.

I'm wondering if it's a DNS problem, maybe try using a different DNS server, eg openDNS or GoogleDNS...

Ok so now i've changed the fanbelt,fitted a new crankshaft pulley,bought 1 and a half waterpumps,bought new bolts,removed sheared bolts and retapped a water pump casing and the rattles still there.i'm going to cry.the engine is quiet when its cold.then when it gets warm theres a very loud kind of chattering noise which used to be only on idle but has started staying on when you rev it.none of the pulleys wobble anymore.noticed the belt vibrates more between the crankshaft pulley and the alternator than it does either side of the waterpump although this could possibly just be because its a longer gap.anyone have any ideas?or would anyone near glasgow like to loan me an alternator to see if thats the problem before i shell out for a new one lol?the alternator works fine and nothing seems to be wobbly by hand but something that side of the engines making a racket and i cant figure what

If your coming to the scottish meet next weekend I'm sure there will be a few people (myself included) that won't mind having a quick look for you. Failing that I'm not too far away from Glasgow if you wanted to head over and put my alternator on your car to see if it still happens.

sounds like could be timingbelt tensioner as sometimes just the belt gets changed and not the pulley. or could be alternator.
if your car rattles all the time take the alternator belt off and run the car for 30secs, see if the noise is still there.
if it isnt still making the noise then its alternator, if it is still making noises then most likely timing belt tensioner.
if your timing belt is due any time soon nows a great time to do it.
its quite easy and shouldnt take too long.

I did the timing belt 2 months ago.it was rattling before that too.whats the timing belt tensioner?is that the cog thingy the timing belt runs on?excuse my stupidity,ive only ever worked on aircooled engines before

One of the pulleys the cam belt runs on. It's position is adjustable so you can get the belt tight.

I have been going through a similar quest for "what's that noise " and have thought mine is the water pump not a serious noise but the sound of a possible noisy bearing that should be replaced before long. I had already replaced an alternator and found it wasn't this, bearings on alternators seem to go blatantly noisy and have clear movement which I had found on a Polo I owned. I also thought that some of my pulleys might be an issue looking a bit bashed but you seem to have eliminated this

As mentioned the tensioner for the timing belt might well be your issue as this should really be done with the belt. I have read on other forums about this becoming progressively noisy. The tensioner is available here to give you an idea.. (good company for various parts)

I'm actually going to try the old stethoscope trick with a rubber length of fuel pipe to try and find the exact place where my noise comes from, obviously treading with caution with all the spinning parts in there!

Is the crank sprocked that the pulley bolts to ok? They can sometimes shear their keyway, although it's much more common on high power 16v engines than stock 8v ones.

If it's not that, it's probably the alternator rattling. Listen down a tube and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from. Be careful not to get the tube caught in anything though.

Took the fanbelt off today and it still made the noise.buggeration!was kinda hoping it was the alternator as thats an easy fix.the vibration when the belt is on leads me to believe that its the cogwheel thingy (technical term) behind the crankshaft pulley.how easy is that to replace without the possibility of me buggering up the timing?i got lucky doing it once when i changed the belt,i'll probably bugger it up second time around.are there any brave souls here willing to do it for beer money?i'd much rather someone that knows roccos doing it than my local garage.

Also maccoll,i have an un-used front half of a water pump here if you want it?bought it then sheared the bolts in the rear casing and ended up buying a whole new thing because i got bored of drilling and tapping.can take it to knockhill if you want?

You sure it's the crankshaft sprocket?, it's highly torqued and notched on to the crankshaft, slight variances depending on year I believe . Hopefully not crankshaft bearing issues!

This is my old 89 GT's 1.8 engine, are you sure you've pinpointed the noise? could it be the green arrowed belt tensioner unless you did replace that? or as you say the red arrowed crank shaft sprocket below the pulley. Is it looking out of shape in any way? or is it just the pulleys like in picture that have a few dings?



I like to see pictures because I'm a bit dyslexic and can miss the point sometimes

As far as help I've only ever done small block Polo timing belt changes,I'm sure amongst the folks going on Saturday might well be able to help or at least give advise. I do have a garage/barn in Dunlop East Ayrshire and I reckon bengould isn't far away from me.

Just spotted this.
Didn't realise you were having such serious problems.
Me and MacColl could have come and tried to help you out earlier.
I'm good at looking serious, scratching my head , mumbling under my breath and guessing but don't ask me anything technical.
I have a 1.8 engine lying in my lock up not far from me if you need any bits taken off to keep you going it wouldn't be a problem.
It is a complete block with all the round bits at one end where the rubber band thing is on and if you need any of these parts just say the word and they are yours.
That's as far as my technical knowledge goes so I'd better not push it.
I'm only 20 mins away from you and if you think any of the bits will do drop me a PM and I'll send you my number and we can arrange something.
I'm sure between yourself, MacColl, bengould and myself we'll soon have you sorted, we could organise a mini-meet .
