I agree with a lot of the negatives about the Scirocco. Brakes especially (Never driven an Alfa sud) However my mk1 the steering when parking is light. This is on modern Goodyears. I think either the VW's car was on tyres not suted or pressures were wrong?
My Mk2 GTI was the heavyest steering ive had on any Scirocco. I can't remember what tyres it had
Your mk2 also had fairly wide 15s with low profile tyres. If this was VW's press mk1 that they used a lot when the mk3 was released, I'd imagine it's fairly tired as it's done over 100k. My Storm also has light steering on standard size tyres (Uniroyal) - but maybe it's still heavy compared to a Sud.

An Alfa Sprint is definitely on my dream garage list - seriously looked at one as long ago as 85 before my first Rocco in fact....
Steering on Roccos I've driven have varied a lot - all mine feel completely different.
I think top mounts, tyre pressures and steering rack condition probably more a factor in heavy steering issues.
I can only agree with the comments about the brakes, I think I'm going to get a real shock when I get mine back on the road.
I seem to remember you used to be able to get hold of a bit of kit which removed a lot of 'play' from the cross linkage - is anything like this still available???
Very surprised about the comments on the steering, yes it can feel heavy stationary, but I think we may have all become accustomed to power steering - after all it's on everything now.

Oh, and re the brake linkage kit - it was a modded mk3 escort linkage developed by Autocavan back in the later 80's, there were specific ones for Mk1 and Mk2 and the Mk1 Golfs/Jettas too - think there is a thread over on Club GTI where the MD Geoff Thomas describes the process behind the bar. It sold for about £150-200 I seem to recall - my black car has one fitted as does the mk1 'redroc' now owned by Mr Brown. It works very well indeed.
