Just swapped the water flange and an O ring to stop a leak on the bottom sender (black). I forgot coolant so filled with water to get some, then drained it off and also replaced the other two O rings whilst at it. I was a bit hasty and got hot water all over the top two senders. Now when I switch ignition on the temp guage goes straight to the top and the light flashes! If I disconnect the grey sender plug it obviously stops but won't read the temp.
Do I need a new one, and what is the name or part number?
Level of water is fine, don't think there is an air lock.
Also, looked like the previous owner put silicone around all 3 senders to stop the leak, peeled this off.
Cheers.

Have I knackered a temp sender?

Re: Have I knackered a temp sender?
I'll have to check, pretty sure I didn't mix them up, the plastic is grey, nearest engine on top.

Not quite sure what you mean.Dutch GT wrote:............., the plastic is grey, nearest engine on top.
I am not familiar with the sender layout on carbed cars as mine are all injection, but the coolant temp sender on mine is the one nearest the radiator.
The wire to it should be yellow/red.

It's the grey one next to the red... which in this pic looks like it may have once been white!

Just thought I would pop in to say that the water won't have damaged the sensors.Dutch GT wrote: I was a bit hasty and got hot water all over the top two senders.

Re: Have I knackered a temp sender?
It looks to me from your photo that your temp sender is the one on the bottom of the flange with the yellow/red wire running to it.
What colour wires run to the senders on the top of the flange?

Re: Have I knackered a temp sender?
I'm away from the car at the moment (it's the mr's car), so can't look at the colour... the photo is no help with all that oil. I think I'll just phone VW and describe where it is on the flange.
