New Locks for Mk1?

Post by G60MAT »

After starting to go through all the bits that came with the car, I have 4 keys, but no key that seems to lock the boot. Can you get a lock set so I can run all the doors/ignition off one or two keys?

I also have a none locking petrol cap, can I just add a new lockable one as per this one, although its says '78 onwards ans my car is a '77?

All points appreciated!

It is possible to dismantle the locks and reconfigure them to work off the same key. There used to be a "how to" but I couldn't find it in the FAQ. Hopefully Craig will be along shortly.

Still on the key quest... I'll post a pic up later but I have 4 keys. 2x the black plastic ignition type keys. 1 does the drivers door and boot, 1 does the ignition. Then I have a metal key that does the filler cap, then finally I have a VW stamped metal key that doesn't seem to do anything??

What should a MK1 actually have as standard? :dunno:

You should have one plastic donut key which will operate boot, doors and ignition. One small metal key for the petrol cap, (if you get a new cap, they will come with it) and one metal VW emblem key that VW provide as a spare for the donut type. Most my cars have come with this setup and a duplicate set. Sometimes the plastic donut comes off, leaving a funny shaped emblem, with dimples to hold the plastic.

Here are replacement keys - I have a two ready to cut at home they are very good quality. Nice as most keys have been in someones pocket/ear/arse for the last 30 years.

You might think about delocking the car ie. using rear handles from a 5 door golf, and remote central locking. I'll be doing this, although its annoying if you have a such a flat battery that it wont operate the motors, it is a little extra security. (you can always chimp it through the rear hatch.)
So many plans, so little time

Thanks mate, I've figured it out! The last key is for the locking glovebox! So I guess my car has had new locks at some point, I have a new set of handles going on so will hopefully sort the barrels so one key does doors, boot, ignition, leaving seperate key for fuel filler and the glovebox! Allegedly! :shocking:
