deffo the 4 + e then... i seem to remember its near enuf the same ( but i am sure that an anorak on here will be able to tell you exactly) apart from the 5th ' economy gear. designed for exactly what you want. I am sure changing a cog in a box is gonna be a specialist job with specialist tools. And i betya somone on here has a 4 +e box laid around... :-)

i can help you do the mainifold but i think i may be out of my depth with the gbox?

does it look easy to do?
swaping the flanges is easy really, done it a few times, even have my own "tool" that the hyanes goes on about, is just a 5mm thick steel bar with a long bolt through it

i should be off to get a new car on sat/sun from liverpool so could stop on the way back?

drop us a pm mate :)

It's a bit warm for my anorak, so faded black t-shirt will have to do...

Gear ratios - in the 4+e:

1st is the same as 1st in the 5 sp.
4th is the same as 5th in the 5sp
e is higher than 5th
2nd and 3rd are both different to fill the "gap" difference between 1st and 4th on the 2 boxes.

I always feel the rocco's crying out for a 6 sp. box - all the ratios of the 5 sp, + the e from the 4+e.

On anything other than motorways I found using a 4+e mated to an 1800 (with hot-ish cam) less than ideal due to the significantly bigger gaps between gears.

Used to have to drop two gears to get in the power - never used 4th or 5th when 'pressing on' on A- or B-roads!

Wouldn't a gearbox from the Mk2 Golf 16v do the job?? Good gearing throughout the range for keeping it in the power, just that 5th is a bit longer for the extra top end. Its just an 020 jobby same as rocco basically. The 4+e will do your head in.
Also, if you need a hand, i may be able to help out over the next few weeks as i have annual leave. Not stripped a box, but hey......always willing to learn.
