Uprated headlight loom

Post by wasted »

I've been looking at getting an uprated (relayed) headlight loom, and on eBay the price for these has gone up to £35 recently.

Looking at the pictures of these, it looks like they're a pretty straightforward setup, and I imagine it'd be easy enough to make this oneself.

So rather than pay £35 for someone else to make it up from parts that probably cost less than a tenner, I was wondering - is there anyone who's bought one of these (or has made one in the past) who'd be willing to post up some instructions on components to buy, how to assemble and how to fit?

dead easy!

you need:

a drum of wire, (flexi extention cord will do!)
crimps (blue) or solder and heat shrink depending on your prefererences,
a box to put it in (splah proof if you want),

2/3 of the following:
inline fuses (15A)
relays (12VDC coil, 15/20A capacity),

i can work it out for you, but it'd be quicker doign it there your self on the! find out hte wiring colours for the dip. main and earth.

which ever side you stick the relays in the thire box, use that sides orinigin al wiring for hte control (feed to hte relays). the other, cut and insulate.

the rest is jsut a big wiring job, replacign whats there, connecting up etc... again I can do a wiring diagram if you need it.

Jason.gallop@eon-uk.com

if you want one (a wirign diagram that is) and I'll try and make one up this week.

Jay.

Hmm, well it seems that buying the gear from Maplins will cost about £30, and that's not including heatshrink or connectors. So I guess it's just as expensive as buying the kit from eBay and also involves more hassle! Never mind - was worth a check :)

Foonzooroo had the kit off Ebay, but found that he had to extend the wirign alittle to make it reach! ...still less work/money than makign the entire system your self!

true - ish... yes, I got the ebay kit, fitted it, and it functions beautifully. Snag is the wires between the relays and battery aren't long enough, meaning that you can't really install it anywhere! I cable tied the relays to a couple of wires as a stop-gap... it's been like that for the best part of a year now! It'd be much nicer soldered/heatshrunk in place, rather than crimped as supplied.... Worth doing it nicely.
