Full MKII Resto..Wish me luck (Pic heavy)

Post by Chris74 »

Hi all.I'm Chris from Alderholt and have taken on quite a project.
The 'Rocco in question is my late fathers C plate MKII GT,Totally original and with the original sale receipt. He owned her from new and ran her until 93,when ill health forced him to stop driving,so she was driven up the drive, parked up and shut down not to move from that spot again.Well until last week that is,one 4x4 and a tow rope got her rolling.
Over the years many people have asked the usual 'How much?' 'Want it scrapped?' but the answer was always a firm but polite 'NO'.Then in january this year he was rushed into hospital, and we were talking one evening about the old girl, whats got to done to her and he gave her to me and Louise(wife),totally shocked i said 'Thanks dad'.A week later he passed away in his sleep.
So,the plan is to do a full and complete restoration from the ground up,doing everything that he wanted done to her, along with a few subtle twists and updates( in keeping with the 'Rocco theme though)that'll make him proud. We have a few ideas bouncing around the ol grey matter, which'll come to fruit in the next year or 2.
And here's the old girl in question, after being dragged out by mothers 4x4,then given a quick wash(it was green!!!!)
Before the move.

His lordship, photo was put in when we moved her.He never did let us tune his wheelchair lol

The shopping list for parts is growing rather huge and ebay etc will be hit hard once we get the 'Rocco to us and we know the full extent of whats awaiting us.The angle grinder, welder etc etc are all on stand by in the shed.

So there you have it,luckily we've done this kinda thing before(although nowhere near as bad) with 2 Calibras(awaits the boo's lol),built tuned and scrapped em..
My 16v Redtop, car was broken for parts 8 months after the pic was taken :crying: , The engine was worth more than the car
Tuned c20xe lump,Janspeed SS exhaust system with de-cat,lowered by 40mm on Spax springs and Shocks,Black 17in alloys(bought 2nd hand, never got round to refurbing them)as well as few other tweeks

You might be able to save those seats - take off the covers and put them in the washing machine. They look pretty good apart from the mould.

look forward to seeing progress - as craig/81 gti indicates you'll find this place handy for bits.

re golf sources - mk1 golf running gear on these although engine bits will be come from a cross section of 80's vw models of course.

Nice family connection with this one, given the history it would be great to see it kept as standard. Good luck with it ! :chill:

Thanks
She'll be left looking as standard as possible on the outside,as we've always loved the look of them. It's the running gear, brakes, suspention, etc etc that'll be updated a tad
Only exterior changes will be the wheels, but even then, she'll be on a set of VW alloys.Already gone down the road of 'how low can ya go','Is it Loud enough?'(you could hear the calibra from quite a a distance  ) etc.In my late 30's now,so time for a new look,ie - Sleeper!! hahahaha  and the 'Rocco's a labor of love and has some very good and fond memories behind it.

We wish you all the best with it here in Bristol, i lost my dad when i was 11, my mums 7 years ago, both my grand parents and my wife has had with ops for breast cancer she has the all clear now, but we know how hard it is for you, lovely to see that you have the car that your Dad owned and you are going to restore it to its natural beauty in memory of him, you should put like a plack on the car after it is finished just a thought for you, iam very sure you will get a lot of help from here, as well as parts, we are very knowledgeable bunch of peeps or we try to be lol, talking about that hows the fuel neck on her common fault with the mk 2s as the mk 1s was the inner wings thats why VW put the plastic inners on the mk 2, and the mk1s had the singlie wiper arms so did the mk 2s until they went to two.

G Beats.Been into MK 2 V.W Sciroccos since 98.Now on my fourth MK 2 Scirocco. R.I.P two MK 2 Scala DX Engine's.Sold GT 2. No longer have a mk 2 v.w Scirocco as it was stolen back in February 2020 .Or another one know have a 1980s BMW.
