Won't idle properly!

Post by Gilb666 »

Hi all

Starting friday morning (very early) the GT2 kept dying, every time i pressed the clutch down when coming to a stop
I thought this was just due to the cold as i had the same problem last year on cold mornings, so thought nothing more of it until i left work.
As friday was very warm in these parts, i thought it's not the cold, and after it died not 200 yards from work, i had to call the RAC who promply diagnosed the problem as a blocked jet in the carb, and turned up the idle speed so i could limp home

Once home, i (by that i mean mostly my dad :hehe: ) took the carb appart to clean it, however the jets look completely clear, did find a slight blockage in one pipe which looking at the Heynes looked to be air, rather than fuel related

Anyhow, this was cleaned, refitted, and turned the idle back down, all seemed fine. also for good mesure at this point, i changed the fuel and air filters

Now whenever i'm driving, it will either idle around 1100 steadily, or bouncing around between about 500-700 - temprature or how long i've been driving dont seem to have any effect on where it idles. I assume the 1100 is becuase i didn't quite set the idle right, but i dont want to turn it down incase it causes it to stall when it idles lower

Engine is standard, however it is out of a ~90 jetta, carb is pierberg with a manual choke conversion

Thanks in advance for any help

Marcus

The low idling seems to have stopped for now, guess whatever was causing it has cleared itself :yahoo:

worth keeping an eye on mate. I had a similar problem, and finally (begrudgingly) swapped to a Weber carb, as I just couldn't get the Pierburg to run right.
