1.6 or 1.8 ? hi guys this is my first post as i am the new owner of a 1.6 scirocco gt with only 57000 miles from new or so i thought until i saw this today cast in to the block at the back of the engine
is it really a 1.8 or do 1.6 engines have this cast in too them ?
and ive orded a 1.6 timing belt and tensioner for it will it be the same belt for both engines ? cheers phil
yes got it off the V5C EW047832 but it could have had an engine swap as the log book says 1600? is there a number i can double check on the engine?
cheers phil
The 1.6 have the water pipe from the head to the top of the rad between cyinders 1 and 2 and the 1.8 have the hose between 3 and 4, but they might have a diffenet head on, I dont know if you can change the heads between the engines.
There is a flat face below spark plug 3 on the engine block which should have the engine number on it the first two letters are the engine code.
hello folks ive checked out the EW part of the number and this seems to be 1.6
im suposed to be picking up the timing belt tomorrow from VW so is the 1.6 belt the same for the 1.8 as they dont do returns ?
and has any one got a 1.6 that they can have a look at to see if its got the 1.8 casting on the block?
cheers phil
Thanks for the info the top hose to the rad is between 3 and 4 counting from left to right i cant see any numbers under the plugs i paid good money for this car thinking it was a genuine low milage one i hope it is
cheers phil
I have a 1.6 in my Mk1 and it says 1.6 on the back of the block, I belive they are the same timing belts, Euro car parts list the same belt for both engines.
Hi thanks for all your help ive found the engine number stamped under number3 spark plug on the block i had to get the sand paper out to clean all the oil and rust off and it is an EW and maches up with the log book thanks again i think i'll come on here again i could do with some tips on changing timing belts
cheers phil
In Mk2 golfs the 1.6 blocks have 1.8 cast on them, as it's the same block. When they built the Mk1, I don't think there was a 1.8 lump, until the early 80s, which would explain why they have 1.6 on them.
