Easiest way to check is from the engine code - have a look at the plate on the engine and let us know what the code is.

I was under the impression that all autos had the 1.8 carb (EX) engine.

no ed - the earlier 1600 gt came in auto form too and of course the early gl.

as mentioned the engine code will reveal all.

The 1.6 have the water pipe from the head to the top of the rad between cyinders 1 and 2 and the 1.8 have the hose between 3 and 4, but they might have a diffenet head on, I dont know if you can change the heads between the engines.

There is a flat face below spark plug 3 on the engine block which should have the engine number on it the first two letters are the engine code.

hello folks ive checked out the EW part of the number and this seems to be 1.6
im suposed to be picking up the timing belt tomorrow from VW so is the 1.6 belt the same for the 1.8 as they dont do returns ?
and has any one got a 1.6 that they can have a look at to see if its got the 1.8 casting on the block?

I have a 1.6 in my Mk1 and it says 1.6 on the back of the block, I belive they are the same timing belts, Euro car parts list the same belt for both engines.

In Mk2 golfs the 1.6 blocks have 1.8 cast on them, as it's the same block. When they built the Mk1, I don't think there was a 1.8 lump, until the early 80s, which would explain why they have 1.6 on them.
