Oil Temp, Voltage etc cluster

Post by JOH »

Can anyone tell me what the three gauge cluster is generally referred to as ie oil temp, battery voltage etc which is found above where the radio sits? My '89 Scala injection basically has a void where I guessing this should be and keen to source a working item and struggling to find a replacement.

Thanks!

Mk2 Sciroccos only ever came with single gauge next to the ashtray - and even then that was limited to the GTX - which had a VDO Voltmeter.

All the other models had a square blanking plate - but underneath you'll still find the 52mm hole. Dreadnought also do a plate replaces that the hard-to-find factory original and allows you to retrofit that single gauge

A common modification is to cut out the ash tray and the gauge "holder" thereby creating a "DIN" sized opening - basically a car stereo sized hole. You can then fit a triple gauge holder like the one linked to by Eeefy.

As for which three gauges - the usual is Volts, Oil Temp and Oil Pressure. The reason for this is that many 1980s Audis came with all three fitted and can still be found for a reasonable price. Be aware that you'll need a specific oil pressure sender - but that's another story....

The instruction manual shows two alternative single gauges - oil temperature or voltage. I'm guessing oil temperature would be a more useful function if no MFA.

There were also Mk2 GTI's which had a single vdo oil temperature gauge (150°c)

I always think
voltmeter: just confirms what you already knew- flat battery
oil pressure: it will just make you worry more!
oil temperature: only really needed on the autobahn :D

It makes sense that earlier models had it too - as the centre console always had the facility for a gauge. However, I had an 82 1.6GTi and 84 1.8GTI and neither had a gauge.
