Drive Shaft Oil Seal!?
Hi all!
I’ve noticed a splatter of oil around the drive shaft as it meets the gear box.
I’m going to start with the drive shaft oil seal but can’t find a part anywhere.
I assume and hope it is a shared part and may just need to order a golf one with the same gear box! If so which one is it?
I have a 1990 1.8 5spd

Re: Drive Shaft Oil Seal!?
do you know how to change them?
its a bit of an involved job a so you have to remove the driveshafts off the gearbox and damage other parts to get to the seal so dont forget to order these too
https://www.classic-vw.co.uk/020-gearbo ... 5134-p.asp
to get them out you prise them out with a screw driver which ruins them
to put new ones in bang them in with a socket and hammer

Cheers James,
That’s good to know, thank you. I did try Euro Car Parts but could t find anything. I’ve just put an order in at ECP full service and a new Rad, ready for the new season.
I’m very fortunate to have a good friend who is a mechanic and loves a good classic motor to work on for tea and biscuits :)

Re: Drive Shaft Oil Seal!?
Seals for drive shaft flanges.

Not a difficult job to change them, really easy with gearbox off the car but harder with gearbox on car as things get in the way and lying on you back on the floor is never easy but do able.
Ive done it twice with the gearbox on the car and once with the gearbox on the bench.
You do need to make a tool to hold the flange in place while removing the Circlip as it’s under pressure from a big spring behind the flange.
You will need some new gearbox oil and good time to change to fully synthetic to help with cold oil.
Oil I’ve been using in both cars for a few years, 2 bottles is plenty.

Great website and everything you ever wanted to know about the gearbox.

Thanks again for the recommendation and help getting the right parts. Mark at Classic VW .co.uk is a sound chap and wouldn’t hesitate recommending the site and service.

I actually went up to see him today to pick up a new gearbox and the amount of stuff he has in the unit would make for a treat for anyway
