Clanging spring noise at full steering lock

Post by Macc »

Only noticed this yesterday, was quite alarming to be honest but have been told that its probably nothing to worry about. Question is, is it?

Probably strut top mounts. There cheap and easy to change

Do you mean the noise happens as you turn the wheel, or it happens while driving on full lock?

If it is the first one, check you don't have a broken front spring. This isn't common on original springs (but not unheard of) but aftermarket springs may well have been fitted. This wants checking asap, as if it comes out of its seat while driving it isn't fun

Righto, methinks Dave the mechanics going to have to have a look at that on Wednesday then, apparently they are new springs but I'll let him pass judgement!

Is it only when turning in one direction? If it's more of a click and it's relative to your speed I would suggest CV joints.

Both directions, and it definitely sounds like a spring

Is it when turning the steering wheel it does it, or when you actually drive?

my brother had a very similar sounding problem and it turned out to be a knackered front spring.
turn the steering lock to lock and no noise untill you pulled forward then clang!

Had Dave the mechanic on the phone today, on mine its the front strut top mount of the suspension, bearings are seized up. Brand new on order! Little_bro was spot on!

fair play, should be nice easy fix then. make sure your mechanic doesn't split the suspension leg from the hub or he will have to set the camber all up again and its a pain to get right.

Just come back from a test drive with Dave the mechanic, new top mount on (the other bizarrely wouldnt fit so he transplanted the bearings), both were seized solid. Quite the difference now!! So much easier to turn!
Quite sad to leave it again, only the carb upgrade and exhaust repositioning to go and its all done
