Gearbox gone

Post by stys0n84 »

Just went to the Chinese after backshift and went to go into 2nd and it was reluctant and there was a large bang and now 2nd doesn't really work and sounds like something has broken off and is rattling around in the gearbox.

The most expensive Chinese I've ever had.

Start off slow and methodical, that doesn't work so shout curse and hit it till it works.

Anyone got a spare gearbox or want to make me an offer on the car as is?

Gearboxes turn up mate, they are pretty numerous in the usual places.

I hope the experience hasn't put you off being a Scirocco owner!

Where are you based? Maybe someone nearby can offer some help and advice if you need it.

Mate, don't let it put you off. I had to have a gearbox change done on an ex-girlfriends scirocco back in the '90's, I felt really bad as it was me that told her to get a Scirocco instead of a Corsa!

A decent garage can change one in about one and half hours and you may as well do the clutch also for good measure!

Don't kill a perfectly good car for the sake of a gearbox, please.

You should be able to find somewhere that will recondition your gearbox for around a couple-of-hundred quid.

Right a poser for you good chaps. My shagged gearbox is a AUG code and I have found a reconditioned one but it is an AMC code. From what I can gleam from das net is that; AMC is a 020 gearbox, AUG is 020 type too and they both are 8v. AMC are from early mk3 golfs and have 24mm Input Shafts whilst AUG have 22mm Input Shafts.

Is this right? If so can I fit an AMC to my car or am I shafted by a big(ger) shaft? :-D
