I thought the anti freeze also acts as a coolant in summer?

It is coolant all year round with anti-freeze for winter temperatures!
Always mix to what VW recommends as too much plain water is not good for an engine.

Changed my coolant in the Scirocco yesterday, Heater control over to hot setting, took the bottom radiator hose and took the thermostat out and tested it as well, took the top hose off and a quick blast through with the hose, fitted a new thermostat gasket then put the thermostat back in and bottom hose back on half filled the radiator then poured some coolant down the radiator hose into the engine till it the water was coming out, hose back onto radiator and filled the radiator then ran the car while I topped up the radiator till the level stopped dropping, rad cap back on and checked all the hoses got hot and the heater was blowing hot air and then checked the levels again once cold. Top fill radiator on my Mk1. Took about an hour at a steady pace with a cup of tea...

I think I'll get a new thermostat as they don't cost too much
