Its called the UJ boot, they get cooked by the exhaust and go britle and break up. They are not an MOT fail, mine was in bits for 10 years before I changed mine as the steering rack gave up so had to fit a new rack as I expect dirt and grit got into it where the boot should of been.
Try searching ebay or VW heritage seem to sell them but I'm not 100% sure which ones fit a Mk2 Scirocco.

Found this one but might be worth a phone call as I thought the Mk2 Scirocco one is a slighly different shape.

I would guess its without power steering as I've never seen a mk2 in this country with power steering.

Yeah I'm serious ..... I think its just a myth that VW ever made a British registered Scirocco with power steering. :-D

Has any one on here got power steering, go on put your hand up!

Didn't know it was an option, wish I had it, despite the low weight (by modern standards), parking is a nightmare.

Maybe power steering was only an option on left-hand drive models? ETKA only shows a power steering box for LHD models, whereas it shows manual boxes for both LHD and RHD.

Thanks guys. There is a few on ebay for 30 odd quid. It's just it will be easier to do it while the engine is out the car.

^ that looks pretty normal(!)

As above, I think mk1 golf are the same. Crazy Quiff do (or did) sell them too. £30 ish is the going rate.

Power steering is likely to be the same diameter, but shorter. (the turret on the rack is taller on PAS)

Not many cars about with power steering, is it a VW steering rack or an aftermarket type?
