Wiring diagram for 1984 GTI? * All sorted

Post by mr.brown »

I've got some spare wires from the 14 pin instrument panel connector that I need to tidy up. The loom is from a 1984 GTI so I think the extras are either to do with the MFA (if there was one) or the upshift indicator.

I really need the whole wiring diagram so wanted to know if it was in the Haynes manual - or any other for that matter (I'm 99% sure it's not in the Bentley).

The diagrams in Haynes are for carburettor models up to 1984, fuel injection models up to 1984, and all models from 1985, with additional diagrams for individual circuits for optional equipment.

Both my Haynes have them in, they also have supplements in the back for later models.

Indeed.

Now out of print by the way, so hold on to it, can be hard to get hold of and prices quite volatile, about six available on Amazon currently, all affordable but a few months ago there were only two or three, for silly money.

God, I bought mine new in halfords not long after I got my rocco, they had it on the shelf. Admittedly the car was only 11 years old back then.

Mine came with my 'rocco, coincidentally 11 years ago, when it was already 18 years old...

I've got one of the Lyndsey manuals, comes in quite handy.

Ah yes, Autodata, got a stack of them in the loft along with all the Haynes (I collect them, jumble sales, charity shops... yes, I'm sad).

When I took the cluster apart on my Storm to fix the coolant gauge, I was curious about the rest of the wiring to the cluster, so I made some notes using the Haynes and the Bentley. I believe this to be accurate - maybe it will be of use to you.

Scirocco Storm Instrument Cluster Wiring

(see Pages 309-311 in the Haynes VW Scirocco Manual)

Connector T7 (White connector "top row")
1 - Blue w/ White -- High Beam Warning Light
2 - White w/ Red -- Outside Air Temperature Sensor
3 - Red w/ White -- MFA mode
4 - White w/ Blue -- Outside Air Temperature Sensor
5 - Purple w/ Black -- Fuel Sender
6 - Grey w/ Blue -- Instrument Lights
7 - Blue w/ Red -- Turn Signal

Connector T7b (White connector "bottom row")
1 - White w/ Green -- Solenoid Valve for Consumption Indicator
2 - Green w/ Black -- Oil Temperature
3 - Red -- Power (Always Live "30")
4 - Red w/ Black -- Tachometer
5 - Brown -- Ground (Masse or Earth depending on your country of origin :-))
6 - Yellow w/ Red -- Coolant Temperature Sensor
7 - Blue w/ Yellow -- Gearshift Light

Connector T7c (Black connector "top row")
4 - Blue w/ Black -- Oil Pressure .3 bar switch
7 - Black -- Power (Live w/ Coil - "15")

Connector T7a (Black connector "bottom row")
4 - Yellow -- Oil Pressure Switch Signal 1.8 bar switch
5 - Blue -- Alternator Light

ThomasD - that is awesome, just what I needed.

Thanks to all for the replies. I managed to find an 82-87 manual for cheap on ebay but the reply above may mean I don't have to wait for it. Roll on daylight....
