1979 Mk1 GLS
not gonna be much interesting from me until Ant has finished his voodoo. for those that have missed it, you can catch up on the amazing work he's ben doing in the rocco grotto thread by clicking here
this week i've had a delivery of these, fresh back from my local sand blasting place
a lick of paint, a delivery from the local motor factor and some skinned knuckles, and i've got me a built up rear axle
for those of you struggling to fit the rear ARB clips, here's how i did it -
little bit of KY jelly on the rubber so the metal can move on it, then pinch it up with a mole grip. i replaced the bolt thing you adjust the grip with a normal bolt. once i'd got it clamped as tight as i could i got a spanner on the bolt to pull it all the way in so i could slide on the clip. top marks to haynes on this one with one of their least helpful descriptions ever.
drums and all internal gubbins are new, using meyle parts

Ohhhh shiney bits, good work and great advice on the rear ARB brackets.
I thought the PB engine is a 1.8 from the Mk2 golf Gti not 2 litre?

It should have a engine code on the block same place as the Scirocco, check whats there.
I might of read that VW did use differnet blocks but its still a 1.8 inside even thought it says 2.0 on the back or I could of been dreaming!!!!

Could be someones used a Mk3 golf engine block and a Mk2 PB head?

As mark1gls points out, you really need to check the engine code - if only to make sure it's not a tall block.

Tall block or short block will fit. All the 2.0 ones I've seen have an extra breather hole on the front of the block, in the same place as a 16v engine. I can't tell from the pics if it's there.
1.6 and 1.8 Mk2 Golf / Rocco blocks are the same - the crank stroke is different - but 2.0 are different so 2.0 on the block should mean it's a 2.0 block, IIRC.

not that much i can be doing on this at the moment, other than getting stuff ready to drop in when the shell comes back from ant.
today i have mostly been preparing central locking stuff to go in. i've got a toad alarm/immob for it, and that does central locking control, so i bought a pair of lock solenoids and built me a little controller for them. easiest way i could see to do it was to use a handful of relays and the +ve lock and unlock pulses from the alarm (it does have other locking outputs, but this seemed the easiest)
all the bits came from maplin, and cost me just over a tenner. circuit is very simple. lock pulse fires 2 relays to give power to the motors. unlock pulse fires the other 2 relays to reverse the polarity and send power to the motors.

built it up on veroboard
then mounted it into a box, with a multi connector on the wiring so it can be removed if/when it breaks
EDIT:

black - earth
red - live
light green - solenoids
blue - solenoids
dark green - unlock pulse
red/blue - lock pulse
