the 9a will fit under the bonnet and is an easier engine to plug in.

kr cams add the fiz - the standard ones are a bit calmer to help with emissions on the cars when new, think catalytic converter. Not an issue on a Rocco.

Tbh - the rear drums are more than fine - my BRM 152 2.0 8v has the 16v set up at the front and drums at the back. Rear discs are a cosmetic upgrade on an A1 chassis car.

Oh and forgot I've got a 9A if you want it. Will throw in a KR head&Cams as well(refurbished) .
Bought it for the GTX however I'm smitten with my 3A setup.

good point re brakes. trying to do as much research as poss for what I need..

so did you have a jh engine before? mines a DX

seems like basically a mk1 golf with lower cog and it's gotta be lighter than a lot of cars. wicked

The 1.8 injection Scirocco engines in the UK were DX coded.

I think the JH engines were the 1.8 8v with cats and never made it to the UK in the Scirocco anyway unless for some insane reason you asked for a cat! :dash: .

I've got a detailed procedure on how to fit the 256mm brakes with the Vauxhall calipers if you want.

Master cylinders and servo are a must as well from a 16v Goof and don't forget to check clean/tighten up the linkage.

Welcome, car looks great.

Cant help with engines as I'm still running standard, but theres loads of helpful guys on here that know they're stuff and about suspension too.

Im just finishing refurbing some 256mmVauxhaull calipers, hoping to start putting them on the car next week. They only cost me £30 from ebay with carriers and pads with loads of life and could have been used as they were but I felt like stripping and rebuilding them.

I think you can also get 280mm and even bigger I think around 300/320mm if you have the wheel big enough for it.

This is the guide I've been looking at. If yours is any better Jabber can you point me in the right direction.

http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/lofiver ... 89891.html

I very nearly went rear disc but decided it was a lot of money, not just the calipers and discs but also you need expensive hard to get handbrake cables and if you go mk4 calipers that dont seize you need expensive goodridge conversion hoses. Then you also need to look at how your going to sort out the bias to stop the back end from overbraking and trying to kill you, if you dont think this is necessary look at JBO's project thread where he has had to reshell his car weeks after finishing it.

All in all its a lot of cost and hassle for some shiny discs, when if you spend a fraction on a whole new drum set up it shouldn't need touching for years, that was my conclusion anyway.

Im also looking at upgrading the master cyclinder and servo, people usually use mk2 golf 16v stuff I think, but I have heard rumours that you can do a simple upgrade with mondeo stuff that gives a bigger master cyclinder and servo than the VAG route and should be significantly cheaper.

Keep us updated.

Rich

Jabber - PM'd!

Thanks again for all the help guys.. will defo hit you all up when I get to doing the brakes! gonna go for vauxhall callipers front and drums rear then. next plan is to source a new engine.. So the 9a is still 2.0L 16v but shorter than an ABF?

Yup the 9A is a 2 litre but the same height as a KR and fits under the bonnet, no problem. The 9A also came in early 90s Passat GT's which might give you another option of finding one, there was also the 6A in some Audi 80's which was the same but longitudinally mounted so is a more involved swap. Early 9As got the KR head, later ones had the ABF head, but all versions got the mild inlet cam, swap that for the ABF or KR cam and get the fueling set up and it will go well.

Cool. Having trouble finding any 9a engines for sale whereas I keep seeing ABFs come up on ebay complete with loom and ECU, if there's anyone on here that's successfully fitted an ABF and overcome the clearance issue I'd love to have a chat!

My other question is can I/what does everyone think about using the stock DX gearbox and cable clutch with a 16v?

I'm not a big fan of the ABF's gearbox. This car is going to be my main car when it's finished so will be both driven fast and driven to the shops!

The standard box should be ok, thats what I am using, and i jsut went for a LUX clutch..
The problem with the ABF is that the cylinder head sits about 15mm higher than with a 9A or KR due a longer bottom end this sometimes causes exhaust manifold issues. depending on the manifold, you may not have a problem the actual engine fits fine. Plenty of people fit ABF engines in both Rocco's and Mk1 Golfs.

aha I thought it was the height of the engine under the bonnet. that's fine then, i'm sure i can find a manifold to fit. thanks for clearing that up!

i'm assuming LUX is the make of the clutch plate? I'm still learning about these things.

There is an engine advertised as a 9a engine on El Bay of Fleas right now. From a Corrado apparently. No bids yet and a 99p start..

lol im watching that engine! near me also, only thing is, it doesnt come with the ecu or tci loom which are the bits you will need.
ive done the vauxhall conversion on my previous one and used to sell the bolts so have a lot of pics etc if you get stuck...but honestly it bolts on with the modded bolts with no grief...
