ENGINE BAY WARNING STICKERS

Post by SYNCRO »

Hi Guys

Has anyone got a clearer picture of the following warning sticker found in the engine bay

Image

Looking at getting a new one made to tidy up the bay or see if VW still have them available

That looks like a warning for when the old 4 star petrol ceased to exist, and about retarding the ignition maybe?

Never seen one before mind. You could try Brown's stickers, based somewhere in Yorkshire, they do a range of reproduction VW stickers.

I have one of those on my Golf. Ian's right, it's to alert anyone servicing the car to the new timing settings so that the car runs on 95 RON unleaded.

If your car feels a bit gutless, it would be worth checking the timing and putting it back to original factory settings, then running it on Super Plus (or using an octane booster with regular unleaded).

Won't have the Golf at Cosford, but can get a photo later.

Cheers Guys

Dont think the timings been changed since it was new as I cannot find anything in the paperwork collection to state this.

Running on Superplus Unleaded already...........makes such a difference.

You'd be unlikely to have this sticker unless the timing had been changed - this was an alteration made by the dealer to "make the car suitable for unleaded" because it was a lower octane than the cars were set up for at the factory. There was a lot of concern when unleaded was introduced that the lower octane would cause trouble with "pinking." In addition to this sticker, my Golf also carries a sticker in the window stating that it has been "Converted for Unleaded by Rawson's Eurocars" (Rawson's being the VW dealer where my grandmother bought the car new in '89).

If you are using high octane unleaded, it would be worth checking the timing as this could make a big difference to how well the engine pulls; the "unleaded conversion" robbed a bit of power.
