Hi
I cannot get my wishbone bolt to engage the captive nut in the chassis leg. It's possible though i cannot tell that the thread has stripped because the bolt has popped out.
Am i correct in assuming that to get to the nut i need to cut the leg? Any other options?
Cheers
Andy

Re: Wishbone Captive Nut
Have you tried to get the bolt to go on the nut with out the wishbone there, just incase its not lined up, or try a longer bolt with the same thread to see if the nut has been stripped. If the nut is stripped you have to open up the weld on the leg and remove it.
There was a guide some where, I'll try and find it for you, but is major surgery to remove it.....

Here you go, I think you need a g-mail account to see it but not sure. (It came from Rubjonny on the Mk1 Golf forum.)

If it does not go the the page its about half way down, a PDF file called "g1 front suspention repair" it's in there...

Re: Wishbone Captive Nut
when removing that long bolt be i love ballet care full, if you strip or cross thread the nut thats inside the leg, big big problem...tip, before tightening, turn the bolt oposite to tightening to feel it in the thread.Follow haynes on this 1...
If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!

Re: Wishbone Captive Nut
Thanks Mark
In the end once the wishbone was out i got a bolt into thus making my day as the nut was still good. Still was a pain to get to gether but the lesson learned here was do not try and put the wishbone bolt in when the both the anti roll bar is attached and the front strutt brace is tensioned.
So we are running and road legal - handbrakes cables and an oil leak to solve next

Re: Wishbone Captive Nut
Glad I could help, at least you did not need to remove the nut in the end, looks major work and some thing I would not want to do..
