No repair sections are available and aftermarket sources seemed to have dried up a long time ago. Fabrication is the only option unless you get very lucky on ebay and the like.

Work completed for MOT: - car is now running on all four cylinders, injector no.3 was loose, incorrectly diagnosed by VW Harlow as a vacuum leak. Injector reinstated and mixture and idle readjusted. - replacement of NS & OS rear brake hardlines. - replacement of NS & OS rear brake flex pipes ...

Hiya Ed, With some force it is possible to slide the trim panel rearward and ping the spring. From your description it sound like a few of these things could be going on: 1) The crank is loose and slipping on the cables. 2) One of the 'guide plates' has snapped. Oh, and if anybody has a complete NOS rear panel (valance to boot shut), there is cash waiting. A big ask I know.

In fact any NOS panels going spare, then talk to me, I have a few mk1 projects in at the moment with more on the way.
