Will increasing the ride-height on a set of coilovers improve the ride quality (i.e. make it less bouncy)?

If I had moobs I would have arrived home with two black eyes.

If altering the ride-height won't make any difference to the effectiveness of the damping, then it will have to be a return to the suspension that VW spent many hours and Deutschmarks refining.

You could try diffent spring rates. Most budget coilovers run on spring With high spring rates above 800Ibs. Hi Ed,

If you are going back to standard may I suggest Koni top adjustable dampers (set close to softest end of adjustment) together with standard springs. Great ride/handling balance. (I have also used the Bonrath spring perches to mildly improve the stance, but certainly does not look slammed !)

Both my Mk 1's are set up that way.

Thanks, Laurence. It would be nice to have something sporty, but well-damped enough to make a long journey comfortable - most of my drives in the car are likely to be relatively long distance. Firm and bouncy suspension is not my thing.

Do you mean the Koni yellow dampers? All the sites I've looked at seem to list two versions, but no obvious distinction between them other than price. Any idea which one it should be?

Hi Ed - yes, (pricey) yellow ones - although I haven't tried the cheaper kits (Red??) Which iirc are valved on the softer side anyway.

Ride is supple over typical UK B roads, and tyres stay in permanent contact with ground with very good grip/control. I added stiffer roll bars to the GLS which keeps the car very flat when cornering and does not affect ride over speed humps etc. Very pleased with the result and fitted the same setup to the Storm.

Coilovers do sound interesting if you can get the spring rates correct however...

I had the Koni STRT kit on one of my cars, which was actually quite good - certainly a lot better than what is on the new one at the moment. I think you need expensive coilovers if you're going that route, but for my needs the adjustability is irrelevant. On a road car I just want a fixed setup with a decent blend of control and comfort.

H&R Cup Kit is the best I've ever had - albeit on a mk2 Ibiza but the set-up is basically identical.
