remove the sendor and find a bolt t fit in there bit of plumbers take should be ok

more likely to be damp when was the last time it had a good service ie plugs leads cap rotorarm

could be the thermostat on its way out

as above yellw/red wire goes into a relay find this then run another wire and earth ot out if the gauge moves then you have a iffly relay if it doesnt move then it will be the gauge just done one myself in a mk1 golf
