starting problems ( i think)

Post by thebrief_1979 »

Hi,

My GT2 which has a weber carb really ony gets driven on the weekend if its luck - possibly every 2 weeks depending on the weather ( sad i know) however it takes an age to get started. probably takes 5 attempts. It took so many attempts last week the battery didnt have enough power to turn over the starter motor

Battery is a good Bosh one - new

I am hoping that the response might be that the fuel in the lines evaporates and it has to be repumped/ drawn from the tank therefore this is why it takes a few goes or that the carb needs settin up as it used to run a litttle rich.

suggestion please

Car has been dry stored and has been serviced every 3000 miles its whole life. Last service was less than 200 miles ago and battery is taken off and charged before use.

More ideas

Like you say, fuel seep back could be a strong candidate. Press the throttle a couple of times before you try and start it. If you can park it pointing nose down a slope that can help.

Otherwise, it may be worth considerring converting to an electric fuel pump?

manual or auto choke? what do you do to try and start it, other than turn the key?

have you taken the plugs out, if so what do they look like? (pic would be helpful)

It's a manual choke (weber carb) - I must admit its been so long since I have driven a manual choke I am never really sure what I should be doing. I just get in pull the choke out and turn the key. Starter motor is new and has a strong turnover. I will have a look at the plugs. I know they did get sooted up in the summer after using 98 Ron fuel from Tesco - crappy stuff - but I did hqve them out and wire brushed them off.

Thinking it could be a combination of the fuel evaporation and the plugs as the penultimate turn over before it bursts into life it does sound like it only firing on 2 plugs

Will have a look at the plugs when I can get to it through the snow
