Thanks for the link James - also found this page on the site which I think explains it... European GTII'S, high spec, UK GTII'S more basic. Solved.

Re: Identity Crisis!
Ahh ok awesome cheers lads.
Joost have pm'd you. And a dvla hiccup is what I thought most likely - love that about the GLI autos!
Not much of an expert but done a bit of reading n always figured the GTII's were a similar spec to the Scala? This one's got a few bits which match up but seems pretty ...

Identity Crisis!
Howdo all,
Had my car 4 years now and I'm still not totally sure what breed she is!
On the v5 it says she's a Scala but the badges on the b-pillars say she's a GTII....
The spec doesn't seem to match either models. It's a 1781 carburettor EX with no power steering, no efa computer, no sunroof ...

Re: Tailgate screen wash cap
Have a look at the inside rear quarter panel under the parcel shelf speaker i.e behind the fuel filler area at the top of the wheel arch. A weirdly common place for corrosion - both my gt2 and Scala rusted through here and let wet in

Re: Can anyone shed some light on a couple of issues?
The rear wiper and the rear washer pump share the same fuse so if the wiper is working there must be power there. Unless there's a wire/connector broken on the pump it's most likely the pump itself.

Re: mk1 golf gti engine on pierburg
P.s There is a blanking plate behind said warm up valve - possible that if this was removed the mechanical pump would slot in - but good luck getting the socket head bolts undone

Re: mk1 golf gti engine on pierburg
As Nate suggested you will need to get a small electric fuel pump as the carb engine has a mechanical pump on the front of the block whereas the injection engine doesn't. In place of it it has what looks like a high pressure pump but it's an electronic warm up valve (makes fuel mixture richer during ...

Re: My 1990 GT2, I love it but its an expensive beast!
If the bonnet was taken off for the paint job maybe it's been put back on a tiny bit wonky therefore preventing catch releasing properly?
Have a good look at the gaps either side the bonnet n maybe slacken the hinge bolts n give it a wiggle

Re: Sump Compression Issues After Rebuild!
Considered it very briefly but with a healthy DX block sat in the shed the swap (keeping the EX head) seems more financially viable.... £300/400 for a rebore? Plus the big pistons :/

Re: EX Head on DX Block?
Nah the DX has fuel pump in the same place as EX on the front of the crankcase, just a different pump
Figured it would have an inline fuel pump
Just got the Scala started (fresh battery n a few hammer blows to the nackered starter), and indeed it does have an inline pump as well as the little ...

Btw, we'll ignore the speedo cable question.... went to it this morning n figured it out straight away. Turns out I was just being a bit of a div.

Re: EX Head on DX Block?
Ah cool, are the cam lobes slightly bigger on the DX then? May as well drop it on....
If the EX/DX combination will work I'm inclined to go for it because while I had the EX in bits I got the head reconditioned so would be nice to use it!
However since MRMENDER's suggestion I have already found ...

EX Head on DX Block?
Alright dudes,
So I'm at the stage where my '89 GT2 EX cylinder block is no longer usable (see Sump Compression Issues for the full story).
Pretty gutted and annoyed with myself but time to dry my eyes n crack on - rather than rebore n fit oversize pistons which will cost £££ I'm thinking about ...

Re: Sump Compression Issues After Rebuild!
So there were some good theorys about what the sump compression problem could be.... unfortunately we were all wrong. Hopefully my pictures show - the downfall was a combination of me and the spring compressor during the rebuild :( piston 4, looks like the end of the top rail of the oil ring popped ...
