Re: Mk2 Gauge Question

Hi Mike S.,

Interesting car you have there! Per your trunk sticker it is a 1989 model year, and it was built on Tuesday October 11, 1988.

Being that it's a late ('88-) JH engine, it should also have hydraulic head, lifters & cam.

Since it was imported in the early 90s, I'm guessing that it had to ...

The "Lost" Storms

Thought you guys would be interested to know... 8-)

The "lost" pair of Mk2 Storms that emigrated to the USA several years ago are alive and well!

It's been a few years in the making, but this past Saturday (7/14) at the Deutsche Classic car show in Pennsylvania, fellow SciroccoRegister member ...

Re: End of an era : ( ....and the start of another

Yep it's a skoda Octavia vrs, built on mk4 floorpan 8-)
Cool! I would change the grille (if possible) for something a little sportier, but other than that, pretty sweet looking car. :-)
[The grille reminds me of a Buick... looks a little out of place with the rest of the styling, to my eyes ...

Re: End of an era : ( ....and the start of another

Picked this up as a replacement just over a week ago, 2002, 180bhp 1.8T, only 66k on it. Lovely motor

I'm going to ask a really dumb question: Is it something within the VAG family, like maybe a Skoda?
I'm from USA and it doesn't look like anything we have here, but the styling is reminiscent of ...

Re: Rubber or cork rocker cover gasket?

When you say 'wheel bearing grease' is that some specific type? I ask because i've always used lithium grease for wheel bearings because that's what the manuals usually say.
Virtually all wheel bearing grease is lithium complex base, but not necessarily all lithium-base grease is wheel bearing ...

Re: Clutch Cable lengths

Okay, thanks for the tips Mark. I would probably use silicone lube, but same idea.
The bulkhead apparently cracked and was repaired under previous ownership (not very aesthically, I might add), which I've always been a little suspicious of. So I will be taking a closer look at all of that once I get ...

Re: Clutch Cable lengths

I'm not sure about why the newer cars have longer cables, and whether that is good or bad or a don't care on the older models. But you're right- the First Line FKC1236 cables aren't available anymore.

The VW part number is 532721335J for the 1490mm cable, so include that in your search. I did ...

Re: Rubber or cork rocker cover gasket?

For those who do still use cork gaskets, here's a tip I've used for many years (from my earlier air-cooled VW days):

Thoroughly grease the cork gasket, half-moon, and worm with wheel bearing grease before you put them on.
Run another film of grease around the sealing surfaces of the valve cover for ...

Yes exactly :-D

I would bid on that one but £20 to ship is harsh. £10 would be normal for a book that size.

Re: Service Manual

Right, the Bentley Cabriolet & Scirocco manual I have covers US-spec JH and PL 16V only.

Here's what I've learned since: US and UK Haynes manuals are not the same.
[I didn't understand why edmundator made the distinction between a Golf manual vs a Scirocco manual until I discovered this.]

The US ...

Re: Where did the Mk2 Storm thread go?

Thanks for your reply edmundator.
How very unfortunate! :crying:
I just found the 'FORUM GLITCH' thread... I'm missing PMs as well.
I hate to think about how much great info has been lost.

I suppose the moral of the story is, whenever you find something valuable on an internet forum, make your own ...

Re: Service Manual

Does the Haynes manual have the correct tech specs for the DX engine?
I'm looking for a manual with all the correct DX data.

Bentley is king here in the USA, but they only cover US models (i.e., JH).
Sometimes Haynes manuals have typos or incorrect data (at least the ones here do... I don't know if ...

Where did the Mk2 Storm thread go?

I know I'm not imagining things... :shocking:

When I first joined approx. Aug 2014, Dr. Dub had this great thread collecting data on how many Mk2 Storms were left in the world. I'm sure it was the first thread I posted in. Every once in a while I would come back and look for updates.

Now I can ...

Re: Clutch Cable lengths

So I've been trying to find some 1490mm DX cables to buy for a while with no luck. Had a couple on backorder last year for-fackin-ever, and they finally went dead.

By all indications (including their webcat) First Line had quit making the FKC1236.

Was the question ever answered, whether the '86-up ...

Mk2 Storm (Cosmos) - correct colors for rear STORM decal?

Calling all Mk2 Cosmos Storm owners who have their *original* rear SCIROCCO STORM decals:

Look very closely at the light-colored outline around the 'STORM' lettering on your car. [Pointed to by the yellow arrow in the picture]

Would you say that:
