Clutch Cable lengths
Went and bought a new clutch cable for my rocco and fitted it today, but its too short!!! The place I bought it from had nothing listed for sciroccos so I bought one for a MK1 Golf KJet as I thought they should be the same. After fitting it I have no free play and no adjustment left to compensate for it.
After a bit of searching around I found a mention from someone on the mk1gti forum that the golfs take a 1470mm cable (what I bought) and the sciroccos take a 1490mm cable. Is that 20mm enough to stop my clutch slipping (practically new clutch).
However I have also seen sites selling cable that are 1660 mm long.
My cars an 83 Kjet 1800 cc.

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Sciroccos with DX engine use 1490mm long clutch cable. I have replaced both of mine and they were 1490mm.

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Can anyone explain why some engines need a 1660 cable? Gsf say it is listed as bein for gtx's from 84 onwards. But I cannot understand why they will require a cable that is so much longer. Have to wonder if it would make routing a bit smoother and make the pedal lighter.
On a similar note does anyone know how to stop the clutch pedal travelling so for to the floor. Since I removed the carpets it catches on part of the steering column when fully pressed. There is no physical stop for it inside the car that I can see.

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
You could do a bit of research yourself ref lengths of clutch cables. I know that DX engined cars require a 1490mm cable because when I got my Storm I ordered one from GSF, and they sold me a 1470mm, I went to the dealer and they checked the part number size etc, even though it is obsolete from them! I ended up getting one from ECP!
The part number for the 1490mm clutch cable is 532721335J.

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Ye I have all the part numbers etc from vagcat cheers. I was just trying to understand why they sell such a long cable for later models when I can see no reason for it?

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Nowhere seems to sell the 1490 cable anymore, anyone ever fitted the 1660 cable to a dx engine before? As long as the difference between the inner and the outer is right it should be ok as far as I can tell.

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Ive just had exactly the same problem, bought a GSF cable (1448mm) and it was too short! I only just managed to get it fitted at all but only with the adjuster wound right in and then the clutch wouldnt fully engage.
Measured the old vs new one and mine is about 50mm longer (probably the 1490 one)
Are these still available? GSF and Euros only stock the short one. Or would a 166mm one be ok?

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Your car needs a 1490mm minimum, try Heritage VW?

Re: Clutch Cable lengths
Ye I had to go through vw heritage and get it sent from germany.
Don't think they had many left either. I was tempted to buy two but they weren't cheap.
By the time this one goes the dx will probably have died and been replaced with something else.
