When my Golf had the same problem I could get the rev counter to read 1/2 the amount of revs by dimming the dash lights, turned out to be a broken earth wire from the dash. I would guess its an earth wire some where.

Check that there is still the rubbers in the runners inside the door. I had one come out of the runner at the back of the door (near the latch). Its just glued in there.

Glad you sorted it out, its an easy job to do with the right tools as with many jobs on a Scirocco

Get the right tools for the job, takes a few miniutes and really easy with the right tool. Glad I got one after trying with bits of rope etc.
