bloody brakes

i have had it up to here now with my brakes this is what i have done so far
1 285mm tsr brake conversion
2 brand new front callipers
3 new m/c
4 9inch servo
5 new brake pipes
6 goodridge brake hose front and rear
7 new brake pipes to rear
8 today new shoes,springs, and rear clyiners
9 today brand new hand brake cables
10 bleed 3 times

and there still poop lots of pedal travel i thought there would be better than this
anyone have and clue please

Start with the basics, check every union and make sure that everything is tight - ive had problems with the hoses not quite being up tight enough going over the rear beam!
You bleeding them manually or with an easy bleed kit? Just did mine with an easy bleed and its a 1 man job, maually takes 2 and much longer! Did get some trapped air in the rear calipers and had to unbolt them and bleed them upside down to free the air up

Which master cylinder did you use with the 9" servo?

yeah checked all hoses all tight use a one man job pipe with a one way vavle in it , a new standed m/c because the vw garage what did the sevro etc saib the 22mm one would not work someting about the pedal not coming back up really getting pee off now spent way two much money on it all

That could be your problem, standard master cylinders dont pair up with the 9" servo. You need to match the servo m/c to each other, you'll need a 22mm cylinder to go with your bigger servo - its got something to do with the plunger travel being different if i remember correctly

Personal opinion is you will have a bit more pedal travel with larger calipers and 22mm master cylinder however brakes a lot lot better than standard, i say this as i have 2 gtx's one with standard brakes in good health (little travel but shocking brakes) and one with 9" servo, 22mm master and 256mm front brakes (54mm girling calipers) get a lot more pedal travel but the brakes are a huge improvement over standard

i have brand new standed calipers with 285mm discs but the travel is very low before the bite if you know what i mean

As above im running the 9" servo, 22mm master cylinder with 256 brakes (girling 54 calipers) but with rear discs instead of calipers. My pedal travel is minimal before the brakes are well and truely on

I would keep the bigger servo but change to a 22mm master cylinder, less work than changing back to your old servo!

Who's idea was it to go for this setup? not to sound funny but for what you have spent you would have been better going for 280mm discs (off the shelf corrado items) 54mm girling calipers (adapters for these are well under £50) and the 9" servo with 22mm master cylinder, using standard calipers your brakes are never going to be what they could, you could try a 22mm master cylinder which should reduce the pedal travel (small calipers) but may not make much difference in terms of increased braking, if you buy a master cylinder from vw trade parts for a 1990 mk2 golf 16v it will be the nice 4 port aluminium one and is similar money to what gsf charge from memory

Forgive my stupidity but with the Golf 16v Master Cylinder do you have to make new lines or do they line up the same as a Scirocco?

Outlets are different so some re-routing is needed.
Someone else who has done the conversion will be able to advise you exactly how.

I used 280mm G60 brakes and calipers (Girling) along with a 9" servo and a master cylinder off of a MK3 Golf ABF (23mm) I was going to use the MK2 16v 22mm m/c but this item was slightly larger and alloy, it was in much better condition too. The 22mm master cylinder does have 4 outlets but they are positioned on the top angle of the mc rather than the roccos which are on the bottom, this means you would need to either reroute the lines or extend them slightly to match. The mc that i am using only has two outlets so i made up new lines and used T pieces to allow fluid to all four lines. This is more time consuming but the difference in braking was definitely worth the effort. The pedal travel was reduced, the pedal was less spongey and the overall braking was a great improvement.
