chocco rocco - custom velocity stacks 7/4/13

Post by wassell »

Hey all,

I bought this about 4 months ago now. she was originally a GTX but the previous owner binned the DX in favour of a KR and 280mm discs. she also retrimmed the interior with some funky checkered pattern.

anywho, after a few problems with the car i started ripping things out and replacing them as i went. this is just a quick skim over whats happened in the past couple of months.

below is a picture of how she looked before i pciked her up.

Image

work starts. wheels off, some electrics out, fuel lines and pumps replaced
Image

all back together with her new boots.
Image

i was having major problems with the K jet so bite the bullet and went for R1 carbs. here you can see the mani a mate made for me. we decided to balance the inlets with 10mm pipe fittings for a smooth idle and low revs. apparently this has little/no effect on performance at top end, so i have it a go. even with the jets at 150, not the expected 180 the car runs lovely. very smooth and decent power up to 5k where she looses grunt. this was to be expected with the incorrect jetting though. also, you can just see the water outlet flange, its the JMR one, and works a treat, cheers jason :good:
Image

carbs fitted
Image

rocker cover sprayed and homemade oil catch tank installed
Image

now, the carbs fouled the bonnet, so i got the grinder out.... however, this looked gash and would probably get me pulled so i bodged on a scoop for a week or two. i know, its horrible, but it had to be done.
Image

at least i colour coded it to the car...
Image

i then mounted the carbs a bit differently which gave me extra space and thus the scoop could be removed. just covered the hole with some aly sheet. whilst fitting the plate i got bored and sprayed the bonnet with some random paints...
Image

...i got told off by the missus and she made me do it properly haha. now its dark brown with some chalkboard paint black stripes. looks better than my effort!
Image

And finally, this is how she now stands as of today. somewhere near postbridge after a long drive. had to draw on the obligitory checkered patch with chalk, and some pakman stuff!
Image

next on the cards is;

4 branch exhaust manifold
new gear linkage/bushings
new door cards
remote oil cooler
new tyres

and a respray in orange with chrome details when i can afford it!

hope you like it.

cheers

thanks, yeah i had a spare set of GT2 rear bench seats and bought some recaros off a mate as the front drivers seat needed replacing anyway. much prefer the more oem look inside now, just need to change the centre console and door cards to make it look a bit more factory.

i'd rather have kept it uncut and colour coded to be honest, but at the time i needed to do it. seems to pull it off alright though.

still have the main jets at 150, and until i can find time to get the car on a RR, thats where they'll stay. i have the means to ream them to 180 but would rather go up in incriments on a RR to see how it effects the car. but for now im happy with 150, it drives really well and pulls hard up for 5k, then looses is a bit. but i know the car will be way way better once tuned.

i am semi tempted to sell the R1's and go for twin 45's though. purely due to ease of tuning. as the jets are underneath the R1's it means you have to remove the carbs from the maniflold every time you want to change them, which is annoying. But, once set up theres no real need to change the jet sizes again. also they cost me about 300 for carbs/mani/air fittings/trumpets and filter socks, and to go weber/dellorto i'd need to sell this lot for at least 250 to make it worthwhile...and change everything over in a weekend/have it running as this is my daily. doubt that would happen really!

I like cuss it is different but when you paint it orange it will be different again as in colour as you dont see many mk 2s in this colour.

Just a few more photo's to show what she's like now. not much has changed on the outside. But i have;

fitted a roof rack
new gear knob
newman 272 high lift cams
had her jetted too, but needs another session as we ran out of time
wired in speakers/amp into the boot, just need to fix the 6x9's into the parcel shelf somehow.

anywho, heres some pictures. she really really needs a clean too!

so i got a bit bored yesterday and thought id start the bigger works needed on this car.

i started by removing the gear linkage, and changing some bushings but needed to order a new short section as mines fubard. but this should arrive later on in the week and ill have nice gear changes again.

i them removed all of the bodykit. for two reasons, firstly i want a non kitted car with big arches, lots of poke and as smooth as i can make it. And secondly because i was fearing the worst with rust under those plastics. anyway, its all off and i found a few rust spots, but nothing too major. nearside rear arch is rotten and theres a couple of small bubbles in 2 of the other arches. will get cutting/welding/filling and smoothing these off over the next week i think.

heres a pic of how she stands right now.

Image

the ronals are going and ill put the teledials back on with some 20mm adaptors when i can (tempted by some 35mm ones though... should poke out a little bit then haha). but my main aim is to get some nice wide steels for her.

oh and i have plans for her going in for spraying in about a months time, been speaking to a mate who owns Dubs on the Rock who said he can fit her in. still undecided on colours, but i think it'll be orange with black trimmings. any ideas?

i know she looks like a heap now, but im glad i started rather than just putting it off like i normally do!

anywho, cheers for reading my utter crap update haha.

Colour is what i cannot decide on as well and wheels haha. Keep at it bud. What you gonna do with the arches? Just repair roll and flare? Or full cut out and something like mk2 golf arches.

Yeah after repair i'll be rolling and flaring them as much as is possible. if i cant get enough then ill weld on some wide arches myself :hehe:

think im set on a darker flat orange now, with black/chrome details to set it off.

still unsure whether to slap the teledials on there, or some big banded steels/something with mega dish. after reading this months retro rides too, im kinda tempted with fat tyres on 9j rims and big mud flaps...not sure if it'll fit the theme i'm going for though, as it'll end up a bit rally-slag-esque.

moving house soon too so gotto shift all the crap i have accumulated. like the arches, k jet system, rims etc. so if anyone reading this would like some cheap spares in the cornwall area, drop me a pm.

Quick update;

fixed the front damper. woop. not too much hassel, old spring retainer was snapped in two, so ordered a new one. thought it was just sommet which happens, but on removing the damper itself to clean the threads up, it turns out one of the previous owners has filled the threads with chemical metal. my guess is either to stop the collar from moving up/down or to repair a possibly cracked collar. either way, stupid and or dangerous. like most of the "modifications" i have found on this bloody car :ire:

so, with the damper all fixed and the camber roughly set up i started to attack the exhaust manifold which was the original KR cast one, and cracked in half. the bolts were seized on the joiner, and as i wasnt going to use the downward section again, i just cut the lot out instead of faffing around all day.

so, exhaust is off. going to order either a dubpower stainless 4 branch and mate it to my existing backbox, or a mild steel ashley set up. [interestingly the ashley exhausts and manifolds seem about 40 pounds cheaper on rally design than from ashley themselves...]

final job was to remove the inlet manifold ready for the bogg brothers one. anyone who needs an inlet mani for a KR to take R1 carbs, the current one will be for sale for a few beer tokens and postage.

ordered some new bits to fit too :

some gear linkage parts
front engine mount - poly
rear engine mount - standard
oil catch tank
front upper strut brace
bulkhead repair plate

also have a mate that'll sort the rusty arches for me over the next month, then ill decide whether to kit her up or not, but probably not. she'll also be going for a respray in either the same porsche brown, orange, black or white. still undecided.

so, should be a busy couple of months. need all this done before mid december, and im out of the country with business for a few weeks. awesome haha

anywho, i also attached a few pics of my mates work in progress rally slag mk2. 2ltr kr with throttle bodies and stand alone management. completely stripped with a competition cage, pedal box, bias control, hydro handbrake. it achieved about 175bhp at the fly, 150 at the wheels, but that was with 272 degree cams and R1 carbs, now he has a 298 degree cam and stand alone management/throttle bodies, so should push a bit more if not more useable power throughout the entire rev range. going to be a sick little car when its finished.

That looks like Julian's car... unless someone else has painted their Scirocco John Deere Green.
