Was sat in traffic yesterday and the car started to make grinding noises when idle. Someone has suggested this is the water pump on the way out. Is there any truth in this?

Could be. Listen to it through a stick. Sounds silly, but it works!

Water pump, alternator, loose lower cambelt cover could all give you a grinding noise at idle, as has been said your best popping the bonnet whilst idling and having a listen and see if you can find where its coming from

Does it change/disappear when you press the clutch in? I think if the thrust bearing is going it can make a noise in neutral that disappears when you depress the clutch pedal.

long screwdriver. tip on the bit you want to listen to, handle against your ear. just watch out for moving bits ;)
