Sunroof seal

Post by chadwick »

Does anyone know if there is a 'standard' sunroof seal I can get?
Someone fitted a generic sunroof (not tilt and slide) to my Rocco sufficiently long enough ago that the seal has rotten and is now held shut with gaffa tape. If you can' fix something with gaffa tape, you haven't used enough gaffa tape...

I am led to believe that all the Mk1 and MK2 Golfs, Scirocco's, Passats, Polos, Jettas and beetles have the same size and type of sunroof seal, a sort of one size fits all!
This is what I was told, never tried it, but I could do with one as well. I think ECP do one, about £30.

Be nice to know your outcome.

think you are talking about an aftermarket pop up/out roof chadwick?

after experiencing leaks on the GTL with its 80's aftermarket roof i did do some research into seals for aftermarket seals on long obsolete roofs. I was told that you need to remove the seal and take it/post it to a seal supplier to ascertain if they have stock of correct size/pattern.

not ideal - i seem to have sorted my one through a very thorough clean of 9 years worth of accumulated mud/grime.

mine leaked big time when i first got it. get round the seal with a soft nail brush and some warm soapy water and get rid of every last little tiny trace of dirt. make sure the sealing edge of the glass is clean too. then wipe a bit of vaseline into the seal. this will make the seal swell slightly and help it to seal.

one easy option i had suggested to me was to go to an aftermarket sunroof dealer and have a slightly larger on fitted.

Bristol Sunroof Centre have sorted it. I can recommend them. I've sent hem the old seal and they're going to replace it. Very friendly too

Have you considered an actual seal?
Actually, scratch that, they're a protected species.
I enquired about one from VW and it was about £50 quid. Pricey but I'd rather get new and not worry about it being cack

Set aside at least a day for this - it takes ages to get them the right shape.

I'm confused... They're going to send me a new seal - £35 plus VAT (inc some market squid and dogfish)
