Which one?

Post by Funky Diver »

So there are folks on here with the luxury of having multiple Mk's of Rocco... but which one would you have given the choice. So you're ONLY allowed to have one of them, in NEW condition.

Forget resale value, forget cost. This is purely out of interest.

I shall declare my love of hte Mk2. The Mk1 does nothing for me personally... Possibly shows my age (40 - I know, I look positively youthful, haha) and the car that I grew up drooling about having in my early driving career. It was signed sealed and delivered when I got a lift with a young pilot in the Army Air Corps in the 80's whilst on a familiarisation visit down at Middle Whallop. Left hooker, red, and he drove it like it should be. Sporty. And that was a standard ragged out GT (of 1983 heritage if memory serves)

Oddly I got selected and turned them down :O Biggest mistake I ever made in all honesty!!

What I have, a Havanna brown Storm. I wanted one when I saw one in my local dealer back in 1985, but the eye watering cost at the time coupled with my youth (19) prevented me getting it!!!

Early Mk2 GTI for me. I can't put my finger on why. I grew up around 70's VW's, literally. My Dad used to take me to work with him on Saturdays when I was 6 or 7 years old. With him working in the body shop at the local VW dealers I was always around VWs. Be it being repaired, in the showroom or on our driveway. I can clearly remember the first Scirocco I saw was a Red Mk1 that was being straightened on the bodyshop jig. So you would think Mk1s would be my prefered choice.

But no, when I really got into cars as a teen, the Mk2 was truly something else. Although I certailny love the Mk1, and a Mk3 on the drive would be nice.

Edit. In answer to later posts, yes I have driven Mk1's and a Mk3.

MK1 GTI for me......Dispite owning many mk1 gls i could never find a injected mk1 without serious tin worm....I owned many mk2's but they lacked the original characteristics of the mk1. My deepest admiration goes to anyone who takes on a mk1 restoration...

Hardly an conclusive poll
MK1's are very rare. Someone has actually sated they have only seen one in the flesh.
Next question should be how many who voted have actually driven a MK1? to make true comparison

OK, but to play devils advocate, a factory 16v MK2 is even more rare in the UK.

You make a fair point, I havn't driven a MK1 but to answer the question, I would have my choice as it does epitomise the modle in my eyes. Its the only one that had the power to justify the looks too. Not that a GTX/Storm is exactlly slow, but you get my point. :beers:

It's not about about rarity, it's not about being proven which is better... Mk1's aren't going to get crushed if they lose out, I was merely interested to see what folks preferred and get an insight into the choices.

[fun] Poll is just a bit of fun :yup:

I have owned quite a few MK1's (injected and carb'd) and quite a few MK2's. I think any brand spanking new MK1 or MK2 Scirocco would be a great, but the question was which one, to which people have answered with their wish!!

There is probably some "new" old cars kicking around in someones garage, not mine though!

Another vote for Mk2 from me. I also haven't driven a Mk1 or 3, and the 'rocco in my life belongs to my Mrs (therefore, an unbiased vote.... kind of).

Even though I find my 6' 5" frame incompatible, I just love the way it looks. Squarer than a Mk 1 with a big old school spoiler, love the square quad lamps (standard, not those weird GTi ones so much). Generally, I prefer the Mk2 anything... Golf, Scirocco, Escort (maybe), capri... as I prefer the squarer look. (there are many cases where this isn't the case - before I trip myself up!!).
