Ok, my basic understanding of a gearbox is; input shaft fromt he engine, through some cogs and fiddly bits, output shaft to the drive shafts.
That being that, would it be true to say that you could matt just about any gearbox to any engine providing the input splines matched? That being that, could you potentially then make a plate to fit between the bellhousing and the engine so the bolt pattern would match up?

Yep its just a case of making up an adaptor plate which the belhousing bolts to.
