Mk1 Classic Touring Car - Bodyshell Prep and 'Bottom Scraping'
...watch this space
A mate of mine is bulding a replica of his dad's Mk1 Golf Touring Car, which ran in the Group 1, Up to 1600 class, of the Trimoco Saloons, which later morphed into the BTCC.
Having come across 2x Mk1 Sciroccos on this very forum, which come with a roll cage, and agreed a deal, I'm going to build a Scirocco to a similar spec, but doing most of the work myself.
This will be a long termer, probably over about 2 years, and I'll be trying to do it properly (start by stripping back to a bare shell).
I hope folks on here don't mind that I'm putting a Mk1 'at risk' by turning it into a competition car. I'm not sure if I'm going to race it myself, but I'll certainly do a few sprints and trackdays in it.
If anyone has any pics of the original Mk1 Rocco touring cars, as driven by John Morris, or others, then please let me know. I'd love to see some inspiration to get me going!

Re: Coming Soon... Mk1 Classic Touring Car - PIC REQUEST!!
BTW, Group 1 regulations are standard silhouette and all steel panels / standard arches, so I'm especially interested in racers of that type, and ideally the original Trimoco Saloon cars, as built by John Maguire (Mcguire?) Racing - I think that's who built them anyway.
However if you've got some cool pics to share, just post them anyway :D
If anyone's got a set of original regulations or homologation papers, that would be awesome if I could have a copy.

Putting a Mk1 'at risk'?
Nonense! Good luck to you.
Haven't got anything else useful to add though, sorry.

Going round to finalise the deal tomorrow night. Will take some pics as the cars are just now - they're sporting some 'interesting' accessories - 10 years of kid's toys ;)

Re: Coming Soon... Mk1 Classic Touring Car - PIC REQUEST!!
I love to see any pics of old Scirocco racing cars, so thanks!
What I'm really after, is pics of the original cars, so I can copy the colour scheme, but it'll be a year before that happens, so no huge rush

Re: Coming Soon... Mk1 Classic Touring Car - PIC REQUEST!!
Lots of cool cars there... none of the actual one I'm going to copy. Jim Morris tells me his dad's Rocco Mk1 was black, and has promised me some pics of the car in action, and of the build.
If it's ok with Jim, I'll post them up.

Re: Coming Soon... Mk1 Classic Touring Car - PIC REQUEST!!
Pics of the cars I'm buying as they stand... the copper one on the left is the solid '77 GLS shell (solid for a '77 Rocco anyway). The red one on the right is a '79 GLI, and a bit of a basket case I think.
"Suit Enthusiast" is the phrase which springs to mind

Cool!

Re: Mk1 Classic Touring Car - now with 'Before' Pics
Hi Rich... I hope so. When I first went to see them, we moved some stuff around, and I had a look under the '77 car. I don't see any evidence of welding on it, although it's very possible I missed something. I expect there will be a bit of rot on the inner wings when I take the wings off, but I think overall it's pretty solid. There's a dent in the rear quarter, but there's a spare one, and I reckon a decent panel beater could make a good job of knocking it out. I'm aiming to do most of the work on this car myself, but panel beating is probably worth paying someone to do, to get the right skills and the right result..
Anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself. First step is to get some suspension and wheels on them, and drag them back to the barn/workshop, for a proper look over.

Re: Mk1 Classic Touring Car - now with 'Before' Pics
Slight wander off topic: but is that a dealer stamp for Alan Day in Finchley on the manual? That's just up the road from me
