Gurgling noise

Post by Sortiel »

Recently bought my first Scirocco, it's a 1988 GT and thought you guys might be able to help me out. When I accelerate I can hear a strange, gurgling noise from the back of the car. The sound reminds me of a dodgy exhaust, a wobbly and wet sound but it's coming from the back right hand side. If I put my foot down to accelerate fast, you can't hear the noise but, if I'm floating along normally, you can hear the gurgling when I gently accelerate. Does anyone know what this might be?

Right hand side I presume you're talking drivers side?

Maybe something loose or noise from the fuel pump?

Yeah I meant drivers side, sorry. I thought it might be something to do with the fuel pipe due to it only happening when I accelerate.

I've always had a constant noise more of a whine from my fuel pump. It's definetly not a whine, and actually a gurgle? Gurgles normally come from the front of the car!

Four Sciroccos, four gone, but at least I know all parts from most current one went to good homes....

is this a carb? if so, it won't have a fuel pump at the back

Tank full or empty?

Does the gurgling happen loud at first then quieten?

I'm guessing a blocked breather hole, so as you accellerate, it forces petrol up the filler neck, but as there's nowhere for the air displacement to go, it's forcing air back down the breather pipe causing bubbling in the tank? Just a hunch based on logic.

You could also double check the washer bottle in the rear isn't emptying its' contents into your boot... :chortle:

Thanks for the replies. As it happens I -was- driving in a lake. I accidently mistook my Scirocco for a boat and went out on a 4 day fishing trip only to find that, after 3 and a half days, I was in fact, in a car. No I'm not driving in a lake :P

- It definitely sounds like a gurgle, almost like when you're finishing off a drink with a straw.

- I'm not sure what you mean by the carb, it has a Weber carb as far as I know.

- That sounds reasonable, I think I'll have to get it checked out when it goes in for the MoT. It's not effecting performance but it most certainly isn't right.

Thanks for all your replies everyone, this bloody place is great :D

hmm... that's more of a schluurp, hehe

Then you don't have a pump in the tank, or at least you shouldn't!! The pump is on the front of your cylinder head. Only injected cars will have a pump in the tank, ergo, you have carb, not injection. The only thing in your tank is a fuel level sender, and sometime petrol, maybe even crap / rust.

Oh how embarrassing, I meant to join the Spanish Armada Register with my Scirocco Galleon, what a fool.

It's going in for an MoT on Tuesday hopefully and I think I'll ask them to check it then so I'll post the results.

Thanks loads for all of your help x

You never said if your spare wheel storage area was wet or dry - have you checked under the mat to see if it is dry ?????
And have you filled up your washer bottle in the boot ? Mot failure if it is not & same with front.
Serious head on tonight and just trying to be of some help for a change.
Good luck tomorrow.
Let us know the result.
