Deleting rear speaker/parcel shelf supports.Best way ?

Post by MrD »

Been wanting to get rid of the 2 metal supports from the back of my roc,but not sure which is the best way to do it ,without doing any damage to surrounding areas.
On drivers side it`s sandwiched between inner arch, pass side it`s on top.Spot welded all the way around.

A) Drill out spot welds, will the make the rest weaker ?
B)Angle grind along the bottom ,as close as i can get, prob with this will be how it looks after
C)Hacksaw and a hammer and cold chisel.

Opinions,anyone else done this /

I haven't looked properly, but I had it in my head just to attack with the angle grinder, maybe tidy up with a Dremel

As the rear interior is stripped out, ally fuel tank, and all my fuel pumps etc are in the back,so won`t be using a parcel shelf, just think they look untidy, and are surplus weight,

Having loads of probs with photobucket, cant see any of my pics, weird ?

This is on my list of things to do on white, personally I was planning on just grinding them off.
The back of mine is going to be carpeted though, so I wasn't too bothered if it was a bit untidy.

Smashing, that`s what i wanted to hear ! Think there might also be an attachment for a welder,to de spot weld, not sure if it would work on my mig,or an arc welder though ?

Just found this !

i'd just go thru the spots with one of these (or a normal drill) then either fill the holes with mig, or seam weld the joint back together. however you go about it, it's gonna need paint afterwards

Well i spent a few hours today ,removing the shelf supports  Combination of hacksaw, drill, angle grinder (scary as tank right next to where i was cutting) i found it easier to free up both ends first, then most of the spot welds gave way with a wobble, and smack from cold chisel, didn`t do too much damage either which was also a bonus.
Have give it a thin smear of filler, but will build up a few thin layers,so it looks nice and smothe..

Moved extinguisher,so it`s within reach, moved amp so i could put extinguisher where amp was.
Bolted sub to rear pass seat space, drilled through and screwed up from underneath, nice and firm now.

One can only assume this is a track day car?

Bit confused as to why you've put great big 600W sub in the back? You could save a lot more weight just running some powerful speakers through an amplifier and wiring that through the car. Those boxes are heavy. Also as a matter of personal choice i'd have gone with Vibe for the quality.

Road / Track ,once it get it finnished it will see the occasional day out on the track.
The sub and stereo etc were a crimbo pressie about 3 years ago ,so musn`t grumble about the quality, plenty loud nd clear enough, although i have my eye on a Johna lomu amp ,and a much more powerfull sub ,will be getting some sort of brackets made up for fast removal, once i work my way through the rest of the list, currently 2 sides of a4  ..

Got Jbl door speakers,Kole tweeters running of the amp in the front, sub has another amp in the back

Great pics :)

Is your fuel tank a custom jobby or an off-the-shelf part? I frickin' love it!
