Scirocco Register

Hope someone here can help me, I find clubpolo a bit variable in its helpfulness.

This problem relates to a 1043cc mk.2 Polo (manual choke).

I was heading along the M5 the other day and noticed the car wasn't pulling as well as it should do, then eventually it lost all power so I pulled onto the hard shoulder. Noticed some smoke coming from under the bonnet, so had a look and the only thing I could see was a lot of oil behind the air box, and a big split in one of the ventilation pipes from the cylinder block in this area. Numbered "1" in the picture:



The only problem I've had with the car up to this point has been a dodgy idle (not sure if related in any way).

Anyway, I restarted the car and it ran and pulled away ok, so I continued steadily on my journey. A few miles further up the road, the oil pressure warning light and buzzer came on, so I drove gently to the nearest garage, established that there was no oil in the engine and filled it up.

My questions are: is the oil likely to be coming out of the split hose? Would that be a bad thing?

yes, the diagram is the breather system, (crankcase ventilation), without looking at the car i would assume that it is blocked and the pressure is forcing the oil out.

prize the round thing from the block and check and remove and check 5. i would suspect that is where the problem lies and the split pipe is a tad perished and gave up under the pressure.

Yes that's great. The split hose had also collapsed, so might be the cause of increased pressure in itself. I'll have a rummage round and see which bits need replacing. Hopefully no serious damage done

the round thing from the block can be a cow to remove and replace, be carefull as it can be damaged.

Totally agree and I am a member of that site.
I find that posts are quickly "lost" due to the volume of users.
Big is not always beautiful and I feel this site has the right blend.
It is easy to follow a topic through it's course.
I too am looking for info on polo problems and it appears that members on this site have the answers to some of my problems.
Hope you sort out your problem and it has not caused any damage.

A polo is just a baby scirocco, iv had a few through my hands over the years......the best being a knackered looking c plate which although was standards engine and carb, would spin its wheels through first and a bit of second and could beat an gtx to 100..my ex blew it up, she never told me what she was doing with it at the time.

Hi mate i have had this problem before on small bock mk1 golfs/jettas, if you remove the crankcase breather [the flying saucer shaped item that your pipe number 1] fits onto there will be a small hole in the block were this seats and that will more than likely be blocked, i have in the past just poked it threw and re fitted the breather pod and had no problems, the hole is for the bypass gases that turn back into oil to run back into the sump, if this is blocked the oil build up is of then thrown back via pipe number 1 into the airfilter housing or out of the split pipe in your case, i have a brand-new never fitted crank-case breather pod knocking about if your interested let me know by PM or something ..simon

I must have bought the wrong one then ( P Reg 1,6 Classic )
Bought as a runaround to save my ROC but it has sensors sensing sensors sensing sensors and I don't do SENSORS.

Yes, the best polo was from 84-90, before v.w decided to put a sensor on the owners bank account.

I've had a look today. I don't have a "5", I just have the pipe "1" which goes between the air filter and the block, where I presume there lies that un-numbered round item that's at the bottom of "1", and goes into the block. I can't see very much from the top, without starting some major dismantling.

The piccy shows all the vairants i guess, the polo i had the trouble with was a 1.3 so it had the extra trap (5) fitted.the bad news is youre going to have to lay on your back and don the latex.ideal in this excellent climate.

I've booked it into my local garage. They're pretty cost-effective and from what I've read, getting that oil separator into the block would be a complete swine. Parts will be inexpensive and I can't imagine they'll take more than 2 hours to sort it out.
