bit of a stutter....???

Post by haddock_n_chips »

Ok this has happened twice now

driving alon dual carraigeway accelerating up to 70 and car splutters and loses power

bit of a judder then off it goes again,

i thought it might be fuelling or electrical??

weird thing is i could accelerate i.e. rev ok but no power

second time it happened there was a bit of a pop from the exhaust when it kicked back in again

any ideas??

my thoughts are either coil breaking up, ignition lead breaking up, crud in the fuel (it was just on the red line both times)

had a quick look at the inline fuel filter and it seems clear?

Hmm....

WiLL.....

Could be something as simple as no fuel.

The guages are notoriously inaccurate so you might think that you have a couple of gallons but in reality you don't. All it takes is a bit of sloshing around and the next thing you know you are drawing air instead of fuel, then as it settles down it draws fuel again.

Next time you get down to the red line on the guage, fill the tank to the brim and see how much it takes.

hey up fella this has just happen to me last friday night
i bet it crap in your fuel lines from the tank, i took the sender out of the tank check to see small bits of crap floating not much put a couple of magnets in the tank , got my compresser out, disconect the fuel line and return line in the engine bay and blow air thought them to clean them out then put a small amount of brake cleaner :swoon: thought the carb its a little bit better than carb cleaner then take for a spin mines spot on now mate hope this helps :good:

Had a proper look over today.

Inline fuel filter was fine. Whipped out back seat to check tank, no rust in tank which is a good thing I suppose! Put a magnet in anyway for good measure

Next onto spark plugs and ht leads, removed leads and all tested fine plugs were also ok.

Hmm I know I'll check dizzy cap and rotor arm. Pull off cap and it basically disintegrates! Carbon spring bit fell out and rotor arm is covered in sooty crap! Quick jolly to euro car parts and hopefully all is fine and dandy now. Cheers for your help :-)

Will....

i'd guess this should point you towards an electrical fault. the pop will be unburnt fuel igniting in the exhaust. take it somewhere dark, open the bonnet and watch the plug leads / king lead really carefully to see any signs of arcing. this would be my 1st guess.

I had this on my GL last week too!!! :zombie:
I thought it was an ignition fault at first, as it seemed to be heat related (only did it when engine warm-hot) and was popping and flaming from the tailpipe at it's worst.
After swapping the coil, ignition module, leads, plugs, and dizzy (to no effect) i took the fuel sender out the tank and blew the lines out as a last resort. Turned out to be a flake of crud in the metal tank-to-engine fuel pipe. It was acting like a random little valve, occasionally stopping fuel flow.
