Starter motor help/advise

Post by sciroccosi »

Hi chaps ive just completed a 2 litre AGG conversion in my 1991 mk2 gti,i know its not a scirocco but the same is often used in them, ive used the modded PB head and the AGG bottom end, (new big end shells etc) it runs like a dream but it seems slow when starting up for the first few times, ive changed the battery and still the same, im not sure if i read somewere that this is a comon problem and to use a diesel starter motor instead, can anyone help me out here as to which one etc or other advice cheers simon

Have you got a multimeter? if so, first place to check would be the earthing continuity from the starter case to the battery - terminal. make sure the earth strap in good condition too as this can effect starting.
And also, is your battery fully charged? This cold spot might have taken its tole on the battery?

Possibly... there is a VW breaker just off the M65 going towards Chorley who'll sort you out one fairly cheap if your looking to replace it. Dub Haus VWs its called, i can get you the details if you need. I got some bits from him the other day he's got loads of bits n bobs down there.

The Mk3 Golf 8v GTI Starter has a reduction gear which will help cranking on the 2.0 engine, which is longer stroke and slightly higher compression. It's a more commonly available option, compared to the diesel starter, as most of the diesels don't use an 020 gearbox.
