Number plate light screws

Hello folks, the Red dead Revolver (89 Mk2 GT) is on the road but needs a bulb on one of the plate lights. As you can see the screws are rotten, along with the tailgate it's self.

I have Mk2 Polo bits that look like they will make great replacements. Before I fight with these Rusty screws with the dremel, would anyone know what size the self tapping screws would be? I am considering just buying some stainless panhead ones from my local Toolstation. I just can't visualise what size they would be. Probably standard self tappers found on most VW's. This will be made rust free later on as long as it passes M.O.T in a month..

They're smaller than usual.

I've got stainless steel fitted, I'll let you know when I get home unless someone answers before that.

Edit: 6 x 1/2 work for me (or if you can get them in SS the originals are listed as ST3.9 x 13-F)

I'll try the 6x 1/2 that are listed as SS panheads in the Toolstation catalogue.

As for the gaskets, they look very like the Polo ones I have spare. Hoping I can kind of retro fit them.

I'll post up pics when I get a chance. Going to have to roll with one light for now.

So I got the 6x 1/2 screws. They look small in relation to the lights I have salvaged off a Mk2 Polo. I suppose they tap into the tailgate itself so will still hold the lights in place. You can see the black cover that may or may not be used on top of the lens.. I have all this times two but the metal parts are not perfect. Hopefully the ones on the car will be ok.

Remember the small plastic washers for the screws. As you say, the tailgate holes are a lot smaller than the holes in the metal holder so don't worry.

A quick rub with emery paper and the holders will come up fine, it's really only the contact areas you need to worry about. You might want to do what I did and paint them, leaving only the contacts exposed.
