high oil pressure showing on gauge?

Post by plastermaster »

Hi guys, finally got my mk2 storm running & mot'd.I bought it a couple of months ago as a non runner (blown head gasket & been stood many years).Anyway oil pressure goes off gauge (10 bar) when cold and even when warm shows about 6 bar on tickover.Could this be just oil pressure sender on the head or something more sinister? Any ideas welcome. :help:

Is this an aftermarket gauge as the MK2 Storm never came with one?

lol, someone who is worried that their oil pressure is too high, as long as the light stays off and the buzzer is quite i would be well chuffed that my engine is so well loobed.

to be negative, pressure releif valve on oil pump or incorrect grade of oil (too thick)....unless oil is pumping out of the rocker cover or the oil filter gasket id be well chuffed lmfao.

Pressure should never be that high. I don't think it is supposed to go above 5 or 6 bar max at cold.
The 'check' pressure is a minimum of 2 bar at 80 degrees c.
Should normally be about 4 bar max at temp.

I had similar high pressure a few years ago on my 1.6 GLi - which did blow oil out the rocker cover.

I changed the oil pump - the pressure relief valve on the old pump had seized and it took a great deal of force by hand to eventually get it to move.

You may find that when you fit a new pump, your gauge will not read quite accurately as the sender may have been damaged by the high pressure. My gauge needle no longer sits on zero with the iginition on and the engine not running.

I'm with Pete on the oil pressure relief valve being stuck shut, very likely after standing for a long time. Change it, it's there for a reason.

Thanks for the replies guys, wasn't certain there was pressure relief valve on the pump but now i know there is it looks like the sump is coming off this weekend. Can the valve be freed off as car has only done 35,000 miles?

buy a new pump.that way if you fail to sort the releif valve you wont have to remove the sump again and when you have removed and refitted the 3 bolts round the gearbox housing you will be reluctant to have to do them again.if you fit a new pump you shouldnt have any issues for many 000's of miles.

A new pump from GSF is about £38, less if you are a paid up member of the register.

Right guys, new oil pump fitted this weekend and oil pressure is still off gauge (10 bar).
New genuine filter and 10w/40 oil only 15 miles ago.
Could it be oil pressure sender or even gauge? Gauge zero's ok when switched off.

Hi Ben, r/cover clean as a whistle and no oil leaks at all. Just joined AA so should be ok if disaster strikes,am going to try and get a manual pressure gauge to test pressure at cylinder head sender point, this should tell me if its something inside engine block.
Cheers Steve.
