A few weeks ago I had a clutch cable snap (again!) and so fitted a new one.It did not feel right and further investigation revealed a badly cracked bulkhead behind the repair patch. A new stell plate was welded onto the to bulkhead and a new clutch cable was fitted (again!). Problem is that the clutch feels "wrong".It feels like it is rubbing as i push the pedal and when I had a look at the pedal/cable point of connection the cable seems to be coming into the car at a slightly wrong angle, so that as the pedal is pushed down it rubs against the outer conduit. I have adjusted the cable several times but it still feels strange. Does anyone have a piccy of what the cable should look like as it emerges from the rear of the bulkhead and connects to the pedal?. Coyuld the stiffness be due to a knackerd clutch mechanism?...why do i keep asking questions?
Not having a great time at the mo. Rear shoes wore out and had to be done revealing a seeping piston, rocker cover gasket was leaking oil onto the manifold causing me to be overcome by fumes everytime I was stuck in traffic, and this clutch problem is starting to really p*ss me off now
What is the routing of the cable like at the gearbox end? They can 'lean' over instead of being vertical and cause increased cable friction. And I believe at the bulkhead end, there is a metal tube on the engine bay side which you can turn and redirect the cable to minimize the bend radius
When the bulkhead was welded, was the horseshoe-shaped hole for the rubber grommet on the cable housing placed correctly? Should be immediately obvious if it's not - take out the underdash trays and the trim above the pedals, and depress the clutch pedal to see if the cable comes through at an angle. If it does, you may be able to get around this by following a little tip Brunty posted up a while back about shifting the pedal along by a few mm.
Also, are you sure you got the right cable? I remember a while back I tried to fit one that turned out to be for the wrong engine size, and it was way too short; caused a few problems with routing.
Hi Andy. i was reading your thread on the heavy clutch, im having the same problem with mine at the mo! Changed the clutch the other day and since then it has to be adjusted all the way to get gears which isn't great as the pivot arm is now really tight and is putting pressure on the cluch and isn't fully realising. it also dfeels like its rubbing as you described. Just wondered if you managed to sort it in the end?
Hi. it was the same cable the car has had four five years and it has been ok, but think it may have stretched due to the old heavy clutch. I changed it today for a euro parts one which i have to say seems very good quality and a very good fit for £23! the result was instant improvement although afterv driving the car four about ten miles or so i think it may need adjusting, or at least i hope its just that!!!!
