Oil Leak cant source
i have a leak on the back left hand side of the engine.
it seems to be dripping in this area ( see pictures )
im not sure of fixing it myself unless its very easy but if you could give me an idea of what to expect from my garage
before they rip the rear from my bank account
the problem has only occurred since i put some high grade / performance oil in whilst on a journey.
i fear it may have unclogged some holes that would have been better filled with dirt !
thanks in advance

its the rocker cover gasket leaking ...... easy, check haynes, for a cork gasket aprox £3 not sure on the rubber ones but the easy route is the cork one.gararge could charge you upto £50 for this....take you about halfhour following mr haynes.
If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!

Get a rubber one from the dealers, cost approx 15 quid but comes complete with new studs. much better as one piece!

I went to a VW dealer and gave them my engine code (DX) and I was given one that fitted!

Re: Oil Leak cant source
If your car is an 1.8 8v injection, it will be a DX engine. The engine code will be on your V5 as well.

Re: Oil Leak cant source
Looking at where the leak is coming from, would also be worthwhile checking the front camshaft oil seal.

is that difficult to change ?GT Matt wrote:Looking at where the leak is coming from, would also be worthwhile checking the front camshaft oil seal.
and is it worth giving the underside a jet blast to clean it up a bit ?

Re: Oil Leak cant source
common problem on older engines. they are not designed for thin synthetic oil. it is easier for it to escape thru very small "gaps" that a thicker oil won't. 10w40 or 15w40 or even 20w50 in a megamilerjonkennedy wrote:the problem has only occurred since i put some high grade / performance oil in whilst on a journey.
